TRIVIA NIGHT - THANK YOU

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our School Trivia Night on Friday! It was wonderful to see so many families, friends, and community members come together for an evening of fun, laughter, and a bit of friendly competition. The atmosphere was fantastic and it’s nights like these that really showcase the strength of our school community.

We would especially like to extend our gratitude to John O’Connor for hosting and running the evening so brilliantly — your energy and humour kept the night moving and everyone entertained. Another special thank you goes to Emma Grant for her work behind the scenes coordinating the donations and contacting so many local businesses. And finally, Brad Hinton for running our Goods and Services and providing some humour and spirit to our fundraising effort, thank you.

A big thank you also goes to those who generously donated items and to everyone who purchased through the auctions. The support and generosity of all involved play a huge role in making events like this possible and successful.

We are so grateful for the enthusiasm and involvement of our community, and we look forward to many more wonderful events together!

Plus, many more business, individuals and families who donated time, vouchers, goods and services.

Make sure the St Liborius community supports the people who have supported us.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

ATTENDANCE

By law children must attend school, so if your child needs to be absent you are required to send a note on return, or, if possible, notify the school prior to the absence. If your child is unable to come to school, please telephone the school or enter the absence form via PAM (Parent Access Module) or email the school at admin@sleaglehawk.catholic.edu.au by 8.55am on the day they are not attending. School attendance is one of the critical factors for success at school therefore any days absent can have an affect on their learning. When appropriate parents should make dental and doctors' appointments outside of school time.  If you child arrives at school after 9.00 am they are to be signed in at the office and collect a late pass.

NO child may leave the school grounds during the day unless accompanied by an adult or having provided a written note. All children leaving school during the day need to be signed out by an authorised adult. You will need to sign the student out of the school via the Kiosk in the school office.

If your child is late to school, you will need to report into the office to sign your child in and obtain a late pass for your child to give to their teacher.

UNIFORM SHOP

HOURS OF OPERATION

Tuesday 8.45am - 10am

Wednesday 8.45-10am

As families are purchasing items and preparing for the new school year the following information is a reminder about school uniforms! We take great pride in our uniform and would like to remind our families of expectations. Our uniform shop has all requirements and is very well priced with good quality materials! We ask that students do not wear branded clothes (this includes sports shorts and socks.) The sport shorts from the uniform shop are recommended as they are longer in style (as per our SunSmart policy!) Shoes are so important as they work hard! We ask that shoes are fully black (no white soles) and that canvas shoes are not worn (either for formal or sport) Please if you need support with uniforms or have any questions, message us or make contact when we are back at school. We are here to help! Below is the uniform requirements and remember to label all clothing especially jumpers and hats! We will let you know Uniform Shop arrangements. Orders can also be made online.

CHILDREN CHATTER MATTERS

Conversational skills

Listening, starting a conversation, taking turns, asking questions, answering questions, being relevant, repairing when not understood, ending a conversation, the way we talk (Volume, rate, clarity, intonation,

fluency)

  • The way we talk:

It is important to understand what makes “good talking” for a certain situation. Some factors include our volume, rate, pitch, fluency, and word choices. The way we speak to others can change depending on who we are talking to e.g. friend, doctor, police, teacher etc. For example you may talk faster or use slang when you are with your friend, or you may speak more formally, slower and clearer when talking with a Police officer. With your child role play and take turns using good and bad speaking for example – too fast, too slow, too loud, too quiet, facing the wrong way etc. Get your child to use a full sentence and explain what/why it is good or bad e.g. Excuse me I can’t understand because…… Alternatively they could give you a thumbs up for good speaking, volume, rate and a thumbs down for bad speaking – too slow, quiet, facing the wrong way.

  • Listening skills:

Children from a young age are taught to be good listeners, to ‘put your listening ears one’, however this mostly refers to following instructions. But children also need to learn how to be ‘active’ listeners. Active listeners engage and listen to the conversation by adding comments and asking questions. Talk to your

child about being an ‘active’ listener and discuss with them how to ask who, what, where, when, how and why questions. You can then choose a topic to talk about and challenge your child to ‘actively’ listen and ask 3 questions during the conversation (topics could be farming, cars, sports, local activities, school, something of interest for you and your child). You may need to demonstrate how to ask questions first, if this is the case ask your child to tell you their favourite story or memory.

  • Act It Out:

This is a small group activity designed to give children time to decide what they would do in different situations. It provides them with the opportunity to discuss the information they need to include and to try to find ways of improving their speaking and listening.

    1. At the table pick a scenario card and discuss these questions, what is happening? How do we know? What will we say and do so that everybody knows what we mean? How can we say this so that it sounds like the talk we use in school? What will we do to show that we understand what is being said
    2. You need to decide who will act out the part and where the action will start, before, during or after the event on the card.
    3. Try acting it out.
    4. Students can then reflect on these questions, what made sense and why? where else could we listen like this?, where else could we speak like this? What would we say differently next time and why?

      Suggested Scenarios:

      • Mary is throwing blocks
      • Oops, you have knocked over a packet/bottle of milk
      • John has taken Bill’s coat by mistake
      • There is no towel in the bathroom
      • Sophie is feeling nervous about spending a lot of time at home ● Any other relevant/real life scenarios

  • Taking turns:

Part of good communication is the ability to take turns. It is an important skill to master as we use it in everyday conversations, while waiting in line to purchase something at the store, when playing games and every time we have a conversation with somebody. A fun way to practise this is to create a story as a family. One person says a couple of sentences, then the next person tells the next section of the story etc. You can set a time limit or a sentence limit. Get ready to be silly!
