Assistant Principal's Message

A message from our Assistant Principal
Wellbeing at MPPS
We have recently completed our mid-year Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) review with Rachel George, our Senior Education Improvement Leader (SEIL) and our colleagues from Elsternwick PS and Cheltenham PS, who we are working as a triad to support one another with ongoing school improvement.
Wellbeing
Our AIP Wellbeing Goal is about supporting students’ wellbeing and behaviour through the DET lense of School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports (SWPBS) and Positive Classroom Strategies (PCMS). This year, we are focusing on: PCMS 1 – Classroom Behaviour Expectations & Rules and PCMS 3 – Encouraging Expected Classroom Behaviours. This builds on our work with promoting and celebrating our School Values and our School Matrix of Expectations in 2023 and 2024.
Our PLC feedback reported consistent classroom expectations, linked strongly to our school values, across all classrooms and learning spaces. The transparency of communication with our SWBPS parent brochure has also supported the partnership between home and school when staff are working with parents to support student behaviour and wellbeing.
Our Attitude to School Survey for students in year 4 – 6 presented an interesting perspective on effective classroom behaviour. Students strongly agreed that teachers create the correct preconditions, including relationships and environment, for students to know classroom expectations and rules for behaviour. They feel respected and heard by their teachers. Interestingly, they judge themselves in a very different light. The students reported they don’t believe that their peers show respect for our teachers or one another. When this data was unpacked with our Student Voice Council, they agreed that everything is in place to support students to demonstrate expected and appropriate behaviours. They agreed that not all students are following classroom rules and expectations which is resulting in teachers and students not being respected. This provides a good catalyst for our work this half year. Following on from the feedback from our School Review in Term 1, we are currently developing a brochure (similar to our SWBPS parent brochure) that outlines our Tiered Approach to Supporting Student Wellbeing and Behaviour. This includes our restorative practices, wellbeing plans, behaviour support plans and our response to unexpected behaviour. Teachers are also sharing the AToSS results with their classes as we continue to work with students around improving respect towards teachers and their peers.
Our AIP mid-year review has been a great opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the successes and next steps for our ongoing improvement at MPPS. The high academic achievements and wellbeing results are a credit to our staff and their commitment to creating the very best opportunities for our students. These results are also not possible without the collaborative partnership between home and school. Congratulations to everyone!
Looking forward to seeing you around school.
Wishing everyone a wonderful and restful Spring Holiday Break!
Kind regards,
Sue Gordon
