Study Skills - Year 10
As our Year 10 students begin considering their senior school pathways, we’ve been placing a strong focus on building the foundational study habits necessary for success in the ATAR program. This term, students intending to pursue the ATAR pathway have been engaged in a series of targeted sessions designed to support their academic development and study skills.
A highlight of these sessions was a recent workshop with renowned educator and study skills expert, Dr Jane Genovese. Jane’s engaging and practical approach gave students valuable insights into effective study techniques, time management strategies, and the importance of maintaining balance and motivation throughout their academic journey.
Key takeaways from the session included:
- Creating an Effective Study Routine: Students learned how to break down their weekly schedules to ensure consistent and manageable study sessions, while still allowing time for rest and recreation.
- Active vs Passive Study: Jane explored techniques such as summarising, self-quizzing, and teaching others — helping students move beyond simple re-reading or highlighting.
- Goal Setting and Motivation: Students were guided through exercises to clarify their academic goals and understand the ‘why’ behind their study efforts, helping build long-term motivation.
Minimising Distractions: Practical tips were shared to help students reduce digital distractions and create a focused study environment.
Looking ahead, we will be working intensively at school to support students in reviewing their current study practices, implementing the key learnings from these sessions, and developing a clear and effective approach to their Semester 2 examinations. This will include regular check-ins, study planning activities, and subject-specific strategies to build confidence and competence in the lead-up to exams.
These initiatives are part of our broader commitment to ensuring that students not only understand what is required of them in senior school but also feel equipped to meet those expectations.
As parents and guardians, you can support this progress by encouraging your child to share what they’ve learned, reviewing their study schedule together, and helping them maintain a balanced and consistent routine at home.
