Year 5 & 6

Anna Kelly, Laura Courtenay and Hannah Jory

Throughout the year students in Stage 3 have worked together in reading groups to improve fluency and comprehension. This term groups are exploring 2 novels relating to our Geography unit of work.

One of the novels the students are reading is Morris Gleitzmans, Boy overboard. Students reflected on the start of the book.

Siddharth - “I think the story is interesting because it is about a family escaping Afghanistan because the government doesn't allow them to go to school.  Some parts are humorous and some parts reflect the challenges they face and challenges others face in the real world.”

Antony -  “The main characters in the book seemed determined to help their family in any way they can, I am excited to explore the rest of the story.”

Oscar “I found this book surprising because of the unjust laws relating to education and women in Afghanistan and how hard their lives are growing up in a war torn country.”

Daisy “This is an intriguing book leaving you on the edge of your seat, there has been intense moments and some that have left me a bit confused. Many of the characters in the book show resilience and have unique qualities.”

As a stage we have been exploring the story, Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah. Students in Stage 3 are exploring Chinese culture. This week they explored writing Chinese characters. Students chose a word they thought described the story and then learnt how to write this in Chinese.
