Devotion

God is with us

It was a pleasure to teach year 5/6 recently and to share a devotion with them as part of the day. In the Book of Mark in the Bible, we read of a time where Jesus and the disciples were travelling in a boat - Jesus was asleep and a storm came up where the wind and waves threatened to sink the boat! The disciples were afraid and woke Jesus up, saying "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?".

It can be easy to reflect on this part of the Gospels and wonder about what would have happened the disciples hadn’t woken Jesus up. It is hard to imagine any alternate endings for this account other than the disciples waking Jesus up so he could calm the storm. It is interesting to reflect on the disciples faith in Jesus that he could calm the storm, as well as their worry that he was sleeping!

Sometimes we can feel like Jesus is sleeping through the 'storms in life' that we may be sailing through. We know that, just as Jesus cared whether the disciples drowned or not, we can also be reassured that Jesus walks with us through our difficult situations and fears. We can be confident that we are safe with Him, as Psalm 121 reminds us that the Lord who watches over us neither slumbers nor sleeps!
