Learning in Weeks 5 & 6

Writing: In Writing, we will be finishing up our unit on recounts by developing newspaper articles around real life and fictional events. We will be examining grammatical features of newspaper reports such as using action verbs in past tense and writing in short sentences to keep to the point.

Reading: In Week 5,our reading focus will be on paraphrasing which involves putting information into our own words. In Week 6, we will be looking at asking questions throughout the reading process (before, during and after reading) as a great tool to deepen our understanding of texts.

Maths: This fortnight, students will be revisiting 'Fractions and Decimals' in our Maths Groups. Over the coming weeks, we will also begin the process of testing students ahead of end of year report writing.

Topic and STEAM: Over the next few weeks for Topic, students will be examining the reasons why people work so that they can become curious to learn more and appreciate that there are different influences on how and why people work. Next week, students will be required to conduct a survey on two family members about their employment and they will be analysing this data during Week 6.

Be Awesome Day is just over a week from now and students are very busy putting the finishing touches on their activities with their group. They are all looking forward to running a fun activity to be enjoyed by people of all age groups.

2024 Student Leadership Positions

In the coming weeks, we will start considering our 2024 Student Leaders. Students will be provided with plenty of time and guidance when working on their applications. We encourage families to discuss this with their children, to help them build their confidence in applying for this great opportunity. Although, not everyone will be elected in a Student Leadership role next year, the application process helps provide an opportunity to start thinking about what it means to be a leader, developing an understanding of their own personal attributes, developing confidence in public speaking and talking about their positive traits.

Dash Winners Revealed

Last Wednesday, Ben, who ran the DASH program last term, came in to announce the winning group projects. The two winning groups were 'Path Danger' and 'The Less Fortunate'. Ben will be in contact with us soon to discuss the next step for these groups which will hopefully involve a video being produced to share their important views on these issues with others.
