SSV Track & Field State Championships

On Monday 16th October, BHS took a bus and many parents drove students to the SSV Track & Field State Championships at the Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, Melbourne.

The school had nine students competing in individual events, along with six other students who were part of two relay teams the school had qualified.

It was looking like it would be a tough day with the wet weather and strong winds hanging around, but it soon shifted after the first hour of competition.

At the end of the extremely long program the school won seven individual medals and eight relay medals, for a total of 15 medals!

This amazing haul of medals resulted in the school finishing in 8th place overall out of over 300 other schools!

SSV Eureka Year 8 Boys Cricket Finals

On Tuesday 17th October BHS returned to Vic Park to play in the SSV Eureka Year 8 Boys Cricket Finals to determine which team will go on to represent the Eureka Division at the Greater Western Region Year 8 Boys competition on Tuesday 24th October.

In the Semi Final match Beaufort Secondary College got the better of the BHS team claiming a 24-run win. The loss forced BHS into the Runner Up Final against Mount Clear College and play off for 3rd place. Unfortunately, the Mount Clear College team secured the win by 7 runs. The Year 8 Boys had finished in fourth place for the entire competition.

Students Involved:

Year 8 Boys: George Bishop, George English, Fletcher Farnsworth, Oliver Hine, Jack Kinnersly, Ethan Mitting, Thomas O’Brien, Hunter Stevenson, Alex Van Deur.

Coach: Chris Maple

SSV Greater Western Year 8 Boys Tennis

On Friday 27th October the BHS Year 8 Boys Tennis team returned to the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre to contest the SSV Greater Western Region Year 8 Boys Tennis Competition on a very hot and sunny day.

The team had a round robin competition included matches against Horsham College, Trinity College and Hopetoun P-12 College. The day began with a 4-2 set loss to Horsham College for a not ideal start. This followed two 3-3 set tiebreaker matches against Trinity College and Hopetoun P-12 College, the BHS team stepped up to win both of these matches to finish with a 2-1 record for the day. This was enough for the BHS team to finish in second place and receive the runners up pennant.

Coach Ashley Rogers noted the fantastic results especially in the face of a few early injuries to a couple of players. They certainly played well beyond his expectations and hopes they all play together next year in the Intermediate Boys section in Term 1.

Students Involved:

Year 8 Boys: Brayden Jantzen, Jake O’Rouke

Coach: Ashley Rogers

SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 Boys Cricket

On Tuesday 24th October BHS returned to Vic Park to play in the SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 Boys Cricket contest. They had 4 matches against St Brigids College (Horsham), Trinity College (Colac), Mercy Regional College (Camperdown) & Emmanuel College (Warrnambool) in a 10Ten cricket format.

The day started off with a narrow 7 run loss to Mercy Regional College, a real winnable game that just got away. This followed by a 36 run defeat to Trinity College (overall winners), definitely the stand out team of the competition. The team then bounced back with a 2 run win against St Brigids College and finished off with an 11 run loss to Emmanuel College. At the end of the competition BHS finished up in 4th place.

Coach Rob Simmonds noted that for team that only had a couple of students who play cricket outside of school, they did a tremendous job. Rob added that the highlight for the day was the quality of the fielding which kept the team in several close matches.

Students Involved:

Year 7 Boys: Hugh Compton, Harrison Drain, Jack Gilbert, Declan Hillis, Denver Minster, Jackson Moneghetti, Jake O’Rourke, Bourne Sri Dargon.

Coach: Rob Simmonds

SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Basketball

On Friday 31st October BHS returned to Selkirk Stadium with 3 teams (Year 7 Boys, Year 7 Girls & Year 8 Girls) to compete in the SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Basketball competition. Due to the popularity of basketball, all teams played in a pool play format to ultimately qualify for the grand finals at the end of the day.

The Year 7 Boys and Year 7 Girls team cruised through their pool play games to qualify for the grand finals.

Year 7 Girls: BHS v Trinity College (44 v 33) and BHS v Emmanuel College (33 v 22)

Year 7 Boys: BHS v Horsham College (45 v 42) and BHS v Mercy Regional College (60 v 23)

In the Grand Final the Year 7 Girls played Horsham College and the Year 7 Boys played Emmanuel College. Both games were extremely close for the whole duration, unfortunately BHS was on the wrong side of both results and received the runners up pennants and missing out on a spot in the State Championships.

The Year 8 Girls were in a deeper pool and had to play 3 other teams for qualification in the finals: BHS v St Brigids College (22 v 24),  BHS v Bayview College (20 v 45) and BHS v Hopetoun P-12 College (59 v 20)

With a record of 1-2 it wasn’t enough to qualify for either of the finals matches. St Brigids College declined the offer to play in the runners up final to determine 3rd place so Ballarat High School was granted entry instead. The team played Mercy Regional College and went down 35-45 to finish in unofficial 4th place.

Students Involved:

Year 7 Boys: Macval Agugo, Raiyan Bin Abdullah, Jack Gilbert, Charlie Hart, Brody Rumble, Bourne Sri Dargon.

Coach: Jacob Borner

Year 7 Girls: Matilda Benn, Hannah Branson, Sienna Hinde, Dakodah Pearce, Eve Simpson, Kate Thomson, Lena Wiltsher.

Coach: Abigail Ashmore (Year 10 Student) & Jane Douglass

Year 8 Girls: Jayla Anstis, Samantha Catherall, Jessica Dawe, Ava Gudgeon, Keeley Pelkonen.

SSV Intermediate Girls State Hockey Championships

On Wednesday 8th November the BHS Intermediate Girls Hockey team headed to the Footscray Hockey Club for the SSV Intermediate Girls Hockey State Championship, the winner would be crowned State Champion! The weather certainly turned it on with the competition held in 30° weather making for very hot playing conditions.

The BHS team was certainly lacking in hockey experience (only a couple who play hockey) but this was made up for the with the positive enthusiasm of the team!

The team had 3 pool play matches with the top school qualifying for the Grand Final. The day started out with two close loses to Wodonga Secondary College (0-2) and Melbourne Girls Grammar College (0-1) followed by a draw against Mac.Robertson Girls High School (0-0). Unfortunately, the team didn’t get enough points on the board to qualify for the Grand Final so the day ended there in 7th place.

Head Coach Heather Kearle was full of praise for the girls efforts and the noticeable improvement of the team as the tournament progressed. She wanted to thank all students involved for the weeks of lead in training, Sabrina Goodie her excellent job captaining the team and to Zali Pearce for her assistance with coaching on the day.

Students Involved: Claudia Ellis, Sabrina Goodie, Adrienne Harris, Izabel Kaletsch, Macey Kaletsch, Paige Kalisperis, Zoe Mentis, Kailey Rouhan, Mackenzie Sandlant.

Coach: Heather Kearle (Head Coach), Zali Pearce (Assistant Coach – Year 11 Student)
