Year 1/2 Learning Community News
Inquiry
The students in 1/2 have been learning about Sustainability and discussing how they can be more sustainable in their own lives. On Friday 22nd March it was World Water Day, students learnt about how they can be more ‘water wise’ and also about communities in the world that don’t have easy access to fresh water. Students collected data about sustainable water practices they were hoping to adopt and voted on the one they wanted to focus on. Students then made a graph, either a picture or bar graph to show their results. Here are some photos of the 1/2‘s amazing work. On Monday, students made beeswax wraps where they sprinkled grated beeswax over fabric, melted it and then brushed them and waited for them to dry. They look amazing!
Harmony Day
On Friday 22nd March, we celebrated Harmony Day. Students learned about the importance of harmony, acceptance, and inclusion. We explored different cultures, traditions, languages, and foods, and embraced diversity. Students participated in the Harmony Day parade, and rotated through activities such as Korean pallet drums, Japanese toys, and Turkish pastries.
Literacy
This week students wrote a procedural text about how to make Beeswax Wraps. Students identified and wrote each step and added an image to match. Students then followed these steps to make their own beeswax wraps!
Numeracy
In Maths, the 1/2's have been learning about addition. We have been applying different strategies such as; count on and all, doubles and near doubles, split strategy and jump strategy, as well as worded addition problems.
