Term 1 has been a blast for all students and teachers. Recently, we have enjoyed Harmony Day and Ride 2 School Day at the school. On Harmony Day, the ⅚’s got to participate in special cultural activities with their buddies. These include playing with Japanese toys, making Turkish pastries, Japanese cutting, and many more activities from all across the world. On Ride 2 School Day, many students rode to school, for example, biking, scooting, and rollerskating. We all had a great time riding on the oval at playtime and competing in a decorating competition. Overall, we had a great first term, and we are so excited for the rest of the year.
Literacy
In literacy, we have been working on narrative stories. We are currently at the drafting stage and have a few topics to choose from. In reading, we watched the movie "Matilda" to analyze character traits, and we also read one chapter of the book. We enjoyed watching the movie, and everyone did an amazing job writing about the traits and sharing great ideas in our writing.
Numeracy
In math, we have been learning about factors and multiples. As we progressed through our sessions, we learned how multiples and factors work. We identified some common factors that make a multiple. We also worked on slides that explain our understanding of factors. For example, 2 is the most common factor for most numbers. Near the end of term one, grade ⅚ students have been studying negative and positive numbers. Although understanding them was a little tricky, we managed to grasp the concepts. On the third-last day, we did some Essential Assessment tests and a bit of Kahoot as a reward for a successful term.
NAPLAN
In the ⅚ learning community, the year 5s had NAPLAN. On the first day, we had a writing test with a prompt about boats. On the second day, during the first session, the grade 6s planned their graduation while the grade 5s took a reading test. In the third and fourth sessions, the grade 5s had spelling and grammar tests. On the third day, the grade 6s did math while the grade 5s had a math NAPLAN test. Once the grade 5s were done, NAPLAN was over, and we celebrated with hot chips.
Specialist
Recently in specialist classes, we have been doing electives. Electives are when we get to choose two specialists to focus on. In art, we made Day of the Dead sugar skulls. We planned, made the actual masks, and then painted the designs onto the skulls. In Japanese, we made Karaben, which means character bento. We planned our Karabens and what they would look like, then made and ate our character bentos. In sport, we looked at different challenges in Survivor challenges. We planned what we could do and what materials we needed, then created our survivor challenges and tried challenges from other tribes. In science, we learned about the harm humans are causing to the environment. We participated in different survivor challenges, such as making a really tall tower from shoes and passing a bucket of water between us without getting wet.
Police Visit
On Monday, the police visited our school and taught us about cyber safety. They explained what to do if someone asks about our personal information and emphasized the importance of immediately blocking anyone we don't know in real life. They instructed us not to reveal any information about ourselves, even if it's seemingly insignificant. Additionally, they stressed the importance of reporting anyone who sends inappropriate content so we can stay safe online. At the end of their presentation, they allowed us to ask questions about their jobs as police officers, even if they weren't related to cyber safety. Overall, they taught us a lot, and we all had a ton of fun!
