Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly

Week 9, Term 1

WEEK 9 LEARNING IN...

📚 LITERACY

This week in Reading we will notice new vocabulary, unpack the meaning of unknown words and use our new vocabulary to show that we understand what it means.

We will continue to focus on writing letters this week. We will consider the  punctuation needed when writing letters; when asking questions, making statements and formally opening and closing a letter.

Phonics this week will focus on the sound 'short u', as in the vowel sound you hear in the middle when you say the word 'bug'. You can also hear this sound in the middle of words such as 'cut', 'grub' and 'thumb'. We will continue rhyming and word building, following cvc/ccvc/cvcc/cccvcc word patterns to help our thinking.

What you can do at home

Together with your child, write a letter to a family member that you haven't seen for a while, or a friend that doesn't live close by. Before writing, discuss the things that you might like to tell them. The conversations that we have before we write help us to build ideas and think clearly about the message that we want to present..

🎲 NUMERACY

We will use location language to help us read, make and follow maps.

We will use familiar maps, such as a map of our classroom and our school, to identify key features. We will also make our our maps, including paths for others to follow.

What you can do at home

Together, have a look on Google Maps. Find where you live, look at a map of Australia and even spend some time exploring the rest of the world. Maybe you have an Atlas in your home? This would also be a great resource to pull off the shelf and investigate together. Many conversations will be started with your child when you spend the time exploring an every day item, like a map.

💒 CBL - Community

We are currently completing our challenge, 'Share with our community what you love about it.' Students will choose a local community group to write a letter to, sharing what they love about it.

🌟 REMINDERS

Our 'Golden Ten' in the morning (8.50am - 9am) is not only a time for you child to come into the classroom and set themselves up for learning, but also a designated time for teachers and parents to briefly hand over quick messages for the day. If you need to speak with the classroom teacher about other issues for an extended period, please make an appointment for another time.

We have been using our iPads as learning tools for the past few weeks. Unfortunately, a number of students still have no access to our school network. To help ensure your child's iPad is ready to use at school, please log on to Sentral (on a laptop or desktop computer) to complete the Mosyle Device Management (MDM) permission. This will ensure your child has access to wifi at school, giving them access to the learning tools we are using.

We are excited to have parent helpers volunteering in our classrooms.  If you would like to help, you will need to participate in a 'Parent Helper's Information Session'. These will be held early in Term 2. Information regarding our 'Parent Helper's' program will be emailed to you shortly. Last week a reminder about our 'Child Safe' training requirements was sent to families; anyone wishing to volunteer at Wonga Park Primary School (including volunteering as a Parent Helper) must complete this training annually before they can assist within our school community.
