School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

School-Wide Classroom Routines

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is an evidence-based school improvement approach that creates a positive and supportive learning environment for all students. It focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours while providing targeted assistance to students who may need extra support, leading to a more successful and inclusive learning community.

Since the beginning of the year, the College has focused in implementing the following routines. In doing so we are creating a structured and predictable environment when students know what is expected of them, minimising disruptions during transitions and instructional time. This consistency helps students develop self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for themselves and others. Consistent implementation ensures all students receive support to maximise behavioural, wellbeing, and academic growth.

EMC SWPBS routines include:

  1. Students Lining Up: promotes a safe and orderly beginning to lessons where staff can set up the classroom and welcome students.
  2. Standing behind desks at beginning: creates a clear start to the lesson, minimises distractions, and maximises initial focus on learning intentions.
  3. Consistent Classroom Layout: each classroom where possible has the same table set up designed to support positive learning habits, teacher instruction, and reduce distractions.
  4. Dismissal from Desks: students wait at their desks for the teacher to dismiss class, ensuring learning focus for the whole session and a clear conclusion of the learning, and a safe and orderly exit.

All of the above routines will support students to meet our 5 EMC Expectations for Learning:

  1. We arrive on time with the correct materials.
  2. We follow all staff instructions.
  3. We are positive and active participants in learning.
  4. We support and respect staff, students, and the environment.
  5. We celebrate the strengths and achievements of ourselves and others.

SWPBS strategies contribute to a safe, organised, and positive learning environment where students have a sense of safety and belonging, and can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
