Term 4 - Edition no: 19, 2023
Year 6 end-of-year celebrations were a spectacular success, featuring activities such as laser tag, arcade games, bowling, and a cityscape adventure. The highlight of the festivities was undoubtedly the moving graduation ceremony and evening, uniting families, friends, staff, and even past Rippers to celebrate the remarkable journey of the Class of 2023.
The evening was marked by heartfelt speeches, singing, personal highlights, and unforgettable experiences. There were reflections on the achievements and growth of students since their Foundation year, as well as those who joined RPS in other years.
Special thanks are extended to the dedicated teachers, Alicia, Brenton, and Sarah, for their exceptional efforts in organising and supporting students throughout their graduation preparation. Their unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds and creating a school environment filled with high expectations, optimism, and success, with a constant focus on student wellbeing, is truly commendable.
Other highlights included the unforgettable culinary experience at the graduation dinner, courtesy of Ben Shewry from Attica restaurant. The array of foods prepared by this renowned chef and past Ripper parent added sophistication to the celebration. From decadent panna cotta to popcorn, chocolate cookies the size of your hand, and honey joys, the dessert offerings left everyone with very full and satisfied bellies.
A heartfelt thank you to the Year 6 parents (Bec, Bridget, Rebecca, Anne) who transformed the Barrbunin into an unforgettable red carpet event, creating a glamorous backdrop for the students' special night. The attention to detail did not go unnoticed, and your commitment to creating a memorable experience for the graduating class is genuinely appreciated. The after-party, a resounding success, marked a fitting conclusion to the festivities, with tired but joyful bodies returning the next day to support the House Music competition.
As we bid farewell to the Year 6 students, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the parents and carers who played an integral role in the lives of their children and the entire school community. Your support and dedication are invaluable, and we look forward to continued collaboration in the years to come for those who remain. Thank you for making a significant difference and contributing to the vibrant, inclusive and supportive culture at Ripponlea Primary School.

Year 6 Arc of Celebration - All to join at 1:30 pm
As the final assembly concludes, we ask all members of our school community to form a special Arc of Celebration so that our graduating students, filled with memories and gratitude, run through symbolising their transition to new beginnings. It is a poignant moment that encapsulates the essence of community, support, and celebration.
The tradition of forming an Arc of Celebration at Ripponlea Primary School is a beautiful testament to the school's commitment to nurturing a strong sense of community and connection.
At Ripponlea Primary School, the enthusiasm for fishing has reached new heights, thanks to the recent distribution of 43 Little Angler Kits as part of a statewide initiative. The kits, provided by the State Government, have not only sparked a newfound interest in fishing but have also inspired a wave of persuasive writing among the students.
Impressively, numerous children at Ripponlea took the initiative to craft persuasive letters to Mrs. Rose, showcasing their eagerness to dive into the world of fishing. The persuasive prowess displayed by these young authors did not go unnoticed, and as a result, many of them were rewarded with a fantastic fishing rod, just in time for the holidays.
The impact of the Little Angler Kits is already visible, with families reporting weekends away, outdoor adventures, and successful fishing trips. The joy of casting a line and reeling in a catch has become a shared experience, bringing families closer and creating lasting memories.
What's even more heartening is the level of determination displayed by students of all ages at Ripponlea. From Foundation to upper grades, students expressed their desire to be the proud owners of a Little Angler Kit through heartfelt notes, persuasive letters, and even in-person visits to the school office. Their passion for fishing and the outdoors was palpable, reflecting the success of the initiative in promoting not just a hobby but a lifestyle that encourages well-being and outdoor activities.
In response to this overwhelming enthusiasm, Ripponlea Primary School has taken the initiative to order an additional 10 Little Angler Kits, ensuring that more students can embark on their fishing adventures. The new kits are expected to arrive in February, extending the opportunity for even more students to discover the joys of fishing.
The heartfelt letters written by some students at Ripponlea Primary School are a testament to the positive impact of the Little Angler Kits. These letters, filled with determination, excitement, and a genuine love for fishing, are a delightful read for anyone interested in the budding enthusiasm of our young anglers.
Dear Ms Rose,
I would really, really like to have a fishing Rod so I can fish in Lake Mulwala and the Murray in Yarrawonga.
My great Aunty lives there and we go up for holidays and long weekends and I always see lots of kids fishing. It would be a really great way to make new friends and fishing is a healthy outdoor activity.
I’ve been interested in fishing since I was 5 years old and I always watched fishing videos. I love Blue Planet and it’s so interesting to learn so much about our fishy friends.
Mum told me about a famous saying which goes like this;
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
I like it because it’s about helping people and yourself. I’d also like to show my cousins in Perth that I can fish when I get to meet them.
Thank you
Indigo
Topic: Why I should get a fishing rod
From,
Florence HB
Dear Mrs. Rose,
I would like to get one of the fishing rods because I've always wanted to go fishing and the reason for that is because my dad has told me stories about fishing from when he was a kid, and he says it's a good experience going fishing.
If I catch a fish, I would have to fillet the fish's organs and I would be learning sciences. Also with the filleting, if I do a lot of filleting I would get really good at it. I would have a skill for life.
I've always liked seafood since I was about 5 years old and if I do go fishing, I’ll be able to enjoy some seafood without having to pay.
If I get one, I’ll be sharing it with Henry (my brother) so you’re giving one thing to two people.
From,
Jasper R.
Dear Mrs. Rose,
Here are a couple of reasons why I should have a fishing rod.
And those were just two good reasons why I should own a fishing rod. There are many more.
Sincerely,
Imogen B
Dear Mrs. Rose,
I think I would deserve a fishing rod because we always go down to Rye on the summer holidays, plus my pop has a boat, and we always go for a family fishing trip. All the lines are too heavy for me, so it would be great if I could have a not-too-big fishing rod so I can join the fun of catching a fish.
Sincerely,
Thomas C
Dear Mrs. Rose,
I am writing to ask if you could consider giving me a fishing rod.
The reason why I would like a fishing rod is because the summer breeze is arriving, and my aunty owns a beach house. We usually stay with her, and they have a boat. We love fishing so it would be fun, and I would be very grateful if I could own a fishing rod.
I am also going camping in NSW, there’s meant to be a river next to us. Dad says I could fish for dinner.
Love from,
Tobias
Dear Mrs. Rose,
Can I please have a fishing rod so I can learn how to fish?
I also love fish and chips, so hopefully I can eat the fish that I catch.
From,
Henry R
Dear Mrs. Rose,
I believe I should have one of the fishing rods because when I am at my grandpa’s house I love to go fishing at the docks.
When I was a toddler, I remember catching a big fish and since I am leaving the school, I would LOVE to have the rod so I leave with some Ripper love. But if I don’t get it, I don’t mind.
From,
Clemmie M
As we look forward to the arrival of the additional kits, let's celebrate the success of this initiative in fostering a love for the outdoors, promoting well-being, and creating a community of passionate young anglers at Ripponlea Primary School. Happy reading, and here's to many more fishing adventures in the future!
We are thrilled to share some joyous news that is bound to bring warmth and happiness to our community. Brenton and his wife Kate, are expecting not just one, but two bundles of joy in May 2024!
That's right – it's double the excitement, double the joy, and double the love for this family as they anticipate the arrival of their adorable twins. As we eagerly await the arrival of the newest members of the Ripper family, let's come together as a community to extend our warmest congratulations and support to Brenton and Kate.
Welcoming twins will be an extraordinary experience, and we know that the love and support of our community will surround them during this special time.
Sending you both the love and congratulations on this incredible news.
It is with mixed emotions that we bid farewell to some special members of our school community. The opportunities that have arisen for them are a testament to their dedication, skills, and the positive impact they have had at Ripponlea Primary School.
We are humbled to acknowledge that our staff members are not only valued within our community but are highly regarded by fellow educators and school leaders. This recognition speaks volumes about the quality of educators we have at RPS.
Corey Posner, your contributions to RPS have been invaluable, taking on the P.E role that not many would embrace and we are grateful for the passion and open-mindedness you brought to our school. Your new position at Caulfield South Primary is a well-deserved opportunity for growth and development, and we wish you continued success in your teaching journey.
Lydia Ioannidis, your dedication to education has been inspiring, and we are proud to have had you as part of the RPS family. Accepting a position at Sacre Coeur Girls School is a commendable achievement, and we extend our best wishes for this exciting chapter in your career.
While farewells can be bittersweet, we celebrate the growth and development that these opportunities bring to individuals. It is with an open heart that we encourage our departing staff to embrace new experiences and challenges.
At RPS, we always welcome the return of our valued team members. However, we also take immense pride in hearing about their accomplishments in other schools and even in different professions. Each journey contributes to a richer tapestry of experiences that ultimately benefit our broader educational community.
To Corey and Lydia your contributions will be remembered, and your impact will continue to resonate within the classrooms of Ripponlea Primary School. As you embark on new adventures, please know that you take with you our best wishes, gratitude and genuine hope for continued success.
Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours.
As we conclude the year, students had the valuable opportunity to connect with their teachers and peers, looking forward to the upcoming changes in 2024. Change is a constant in life, and while it may not always align with our expectations, the unwavering support from parents ensures a smooth transition for our children.
We are delighted to introduce our dedicated workforce for 2024. Our committed educators are poised to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the new year, providing unwavering support to every student at RPS. Together, as a community, we look forward to a wonderful and enriching year ahead.

The journey to success for the Rocking Rippers and the Ripponlea Stars began long before the grand finals. Every morning, well before the school day officially commenced, these dedicated athletes, along with their supportive parents, gathered on the basketball court to hone their skills and build the camaraderie that would propel them to victory.
The victories of the Rocking Rippers and the Ripponlea Stars are not just triumphs for the teams themselves but also moments of pride for the entire RPS community.
Hanukkah is one of the most important holidays in the Jewish faith. This year it started on the evening of the 7th of December and lasted for eight days. It's also known as the Festival of Light, and families use a candleholder, a menora with eight branches to represent this. The adults light the candle every day at nightfall and blessings are said. Why do people from the Jewish faith do this?
Over 2,000 years ago there was a war between the Jewish and the Greek people. The Greek people won the war and they forbade the Jewish people from practicing their religion. However, soon there was a revolt from a group of Jewish people and they helped free Jerusalem and give the city back to the people. However, the temple had been ruined. A second temple had to be rededicated so the Jewish people lit the menora. Unfortunately, there was only enough oil for it to burn for one night. Miraculously the candles kept on burning for eight nights before the oil ran out.
During Hannukah, many sweet treats are enjoyed, often fried in oil in memory of the miracle. Last week, the students of 12A were treated to a feast of celebratory doughnuts to celebrate Hanukkah. They also sampled potatoes Latkas. Natan's Mum, Maaryasha, who owns and runs Zelda Bakery in Ripponlea kindly offered to come in and share her family's and faith traditions. The students of 12A learned a lot about the festival and certainly enjoyed these special treats.
Thanks Maaryasha!
As Corey MD took centre stage as the Master of Ceremonies at the 2024 House Music Competition, the Barbunnin venue crackled with anticipation. The air was charged with energy, and it was evident that the audience was in for a treat. From the very first house that graced the stage with synchronised movements set to the iconic "Men in Black," it was clear that this competition was going to be nothing short of spectacular.
The audience was captivated as each house showcased their talents with flair and precision. The judges, Mrs Nield, Brenton, Mr G, and Ms Cook, were ready with pens in hand, swiftly jotting down their notes as the performances unfolded before them. The Barbunnin transformed into a vibrant dance floor where the rhythm of house music united students, parents, and staff alike.
Corey MD, with charisma that matched the electrifying atmosphere, announced the next dance number, setting the stage for another high-energy performance that had parents singing along in the background. The competition was reaching new heights, and the judges began to show signs that they were fully immersed in the captivating performances before them. Every house left no stone unturned, delivering breathtaking handstands, air flips, and breakdancing that showcased the incredible talents of the participants.
As each house concluded their performance, Corey MD, in an unprecedented move, awarded every house an extra 10 points towards their total. The audience responded with thunderous applause and cheers, showing respect for the effort and dedication displayed by each house. The Barbunnin was alive with enthusiasm, and it was clear that this House Music Competition was destined to be remembered for years to come.
Before anyone could catch their breath, it was time for the judges to make the difficult decision of selecting a winner. The competition had been fierce, and the stakes were high. The judges, feeling the weight of the moment, rose from their seats and walked out of the Barbunnin to deliberate. Meanwhile, Corey MD, ever the entertainer, kept the energy alive by engaging the audience with witty jokes and banter.
After what seemed like an eternity, the judges returned to deliver their verdict. The tension in the room was palpable as Corey MD announced Warren as the winner of the spectacular House Music Competition. The crowd erupted in cheers, acknowledging the talent and dedication displayed by Warren.
As a special acknowledgement, Warren was awarded 1000 points towards their house total for the end of the year, solidifying their place in the school's history. The 2024 House Music Competition not only showcased the incredible talents of the students but also brought the school community together in a celebration of music, dance, and fun. It was a an afternoon to remember, etched in the memory books as a testament to the spirit of unity and creativity that defines the school's vibrant culture.
Foundation to Year 2 Intensive Swimming Program at Caulfield Grammar School has emerged as a standout experience for our younger students. The program not only brings the joy of swimming to the forefront but also transforms the way students and staff engage with aquatic activities.
Both students and staff have expressed their satisfaction with the program. The proximity of the pool has made the entire experience more accessible and efficient. No longer do students have to endure long bus rides or coordinate challenges associated with off-site facilities. A simple stroll to the pool has become a delightful part of their routine, setting a positive tone for their swimming sessions.
Here's a glimpse of what some of the students had to say:
Frida: "I loved swimming with my friends every day and the last day was super fun, especially diving off the board".
Frances: "The pool was nice and cool on hot days and I learned lots of strokes".
Odee: "Swimming was great fun as we learned about backstroke and the teachers were really nice".
Sia: I liked the deep end of the pool when we did lots of diving and breaststroke was hard but I managed to get it".
Henry: "I loved swimming underwater".
Siya: "We did torpedos in the deep end and lots of jumping into the water".
Liv: " I loved learning to swim and doing freestyle".
Scarlett: At swimming, we had to float on these very large mats, it was fun".
These heartwarming reflections highlight not only the enjoyment but also the sense of accomplishment and confidence that the swimming program has instilled in the younger students.
With the festive season in full swing, Ripponlea Primary School has been buzzing with joy and celebration. Amid the laughter, festivities, and an abundance of party foods, one person has stood out as the unsung hero behind many delightful surprises for staff and students alike – the remarkable Lee Brennan.
Lee Brennan is not just a familiar face at Ripponlea; she is the embodiment of dedication, creativity, and generosity. As a long-time volunteer at the school, Lee has been the driving force behind numerous initiatives that have brought smiles to the faces of students, staff, and families alike.
One of Lee's standout contributions has been her involvement in organising cake raffles and special treats at the Snack Shack. These delicious and imaginative creations have become synonymous with joy and anticipation at Ripponlea Primary School. Lee's culinary skills and creativity have turned ordinary moments into extraordinary memories, making her a beloved figure in the school community.
What makes Lee's contributions even more exceptional is the fact that she undertakes these endeavours purely out of the goodness of her heart. Her selflessness and commitment to making the school experience special for everyone have not gone unnoticed. While there are undoubtedly many incredible families at Ripponlea, Lee's impact resonates deeply with those who have had the pleasure of working with her or simply being her friend.
Lee's involvement goes beyond the kitchen, as she has become an integral part of various aspects of school life. From supporting fundraisers to participating in food days, Lee's positive influence extends to every corner of Ripponlea Primary School. Her willingness to lend a helping hand and never saying no to any request reflects her genuine passion for making a difference in the lives of others.
As the year comes to a close, the Ripponlea community can't help but reflect on the immeasurable contributions of Lee Brennan. Looking ahead, it's no surprise that Lee is already planning and contemplating the special treats and cake raffles for the upcoming year. Her forward-thinking and commitment to bringing happiness to others demonstrate that her impact will continue to be felt in 2024 and beyond.
As Ripponlea Primary School revels in the festive spirit, it is only fitting to take a moment to acknowledge and express gratitude to Lee Brennan.
