PAPER MAKING

The Acacia group took recycling to a new level today by turning old paper into new paper. We tore used sheets of paper into small pieces and then soaked them in water overnight. When the paper was soft, we put it in the blender with some water and made pulp which was really smoodgy like soggy cereal. Outside, we added some of the pulp to a big tub of water and swirled it around so all the pieces were floating around. We then used a wooden frame with some flywire stretched over it and dipped it into the 'paper soup' as we called it.

We lifted the frame out of the tub and captured lots of the soup and the water drained out through the holes in the wire. We then flipped the frame over onto some towels lined with chux cloth and used a sponge to soak up extra water. We lifted the frame off to reveal a new sheet of paper! After some practice making plain paper, we experimented with adding some coloured tissue paper to the mix and made rainbow paper.

This experience was so much fun and a great way for the children to see how we can use old things to make something new. They see us using separate bins for paper and rubbish and we speak about recycling but this experience allowed them to see the whole process of how paper can be recycled.
