Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

Year 1 have had a busy few weeks learning new dances during sport including the Macarena and The Grand Old Duke of York.  1P enjoyed painting Jacaranda trees and making Chinese fans to support the book they are studying - "Chinese New Year Colours" by Rich Lo. They have also been doing some fine motor activities using beads to make some decorations.

Year 1 have been building 3D objects and they enjoyed learning about the Dodecagon and Dodecahedron as an extension activity.

Stage 2

3S students are turning into great storytellers who write engaging and entertaining imaginative stories. Instead of starting with boring beginnings, our students now use an exciting technique called "sizzling start" to grab readers' attention and keep them reading. They learned this by watching the beginning scenes of Disney movies to see how good writers make moments more intense. Then they practised doing the same thing in their orientation.

Students worked hard in different subjects too. In math, they learned about odd and even numbers using hundreds charts. They found out that even numbers always end with 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 in the ones place. Now, they can easily tell if a number is odd or even, even if it's as big as five digits.

Students applied their knowledge of POP art to craft their own versions of Vegemite. They played around with bright colours, creating unique designs for their Vegemite jars. It was wonderful to witness them using what they've learned in previous lessons.

Stage 3

During Term 4, 6L students have delved into the rich world of poetry. They have explored renowned works by celebrated poets, including Walt Whitman's "Oh Me, Oh Life!" and iconic Australian ballads by figures like Henry Lawson and AB Patterson.

6L have explored different forms of poetry, such as odes, ballads, shape poems and limericks and looked at the differences between free and fixed verse poetry. They have used this understanding along with the elements of poetry to compose their own poems, learning to tell stories, express emotions and use humour through verse.

Below are examples of free verse poetry by Jiyu B and a ballad by D.H. Yune.

Evie Grace

by Jiyu B

I met you when I was just at the age of 4

Just a little young girl

We were both so young

There are so many good memories we have had together

I would always stay in the classroom with you

I felt so special when you chose me to stay

You brightened my day every time

With your smile

With your little tiny blonde hairs

But it devastated me

It totally crushed me

When I heard those 2 words

It changed my whole life

“She died…”

You were only 6

You could have lived so much more

But god did his thing

He had to have a plan

Right?

Thinking about you

Even after over 5 years

It breaks me

But

I know you’re up there

In God's arms

Facing me

And looking at what I am doing

You will forever be in my heart

The War Bride’s Sorrow

By D.H. Yune

As Time Flies by, I will weep

A man at war, a promise he can’t keep,

For when it ends, he will soulfully lie,

And I will sob, my tears won’t dry.

Is this the worst life can be?

It’s surely treacherous, can’t you see?

Full of terror is this thing,

An Ominous feeling is what it’ll bring.
