Year 3/4 Celebration Newsletter
Reading:
This term in Reading, the Grade 3 & 4 students participated in various author studies. Throughout these author studies, students learned about where the author came from and their background. After studying the author, each class then studied a particular novel. Throughout these novel studies, students analysed certain chapters. They practised all of the comprehension strategies and looked deeper into the characters and the plot of the narrative.
Writing:
This term in Writing, the Grade 3 & 4 students wrote Persuasive pieces focusing on advertisements - students looked into the techniques and language used in them to persuade the audience. Students created procedural pieces where they looked into the structure and language features, they also created their own procedural pieces.
Mathematics:
This term in Mathematics, Grade 3 and 4 students focused on volume and capacity concepts. They delved into understanding and working with measurements related to the amount of space inside containers and learned how to compare different capacities. Students also focused on money whereby they acquired valuable skills in handling money and receiving change. They also explored fractions and decimals, focusing on modelling and representing various fractions and conducting investigations into equivalent fractions, further enhancing their mathematical proficiency.
Wellbeing:
During the fourth term, students in grades 3 and 4 continued their engagement in weekly activities centred around the Resilience Project. These activities integrated elements from the Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships toolkit. The primary focus of these lessons remained on nurturing and enhancing students' personal and social skills, fostering qualities such as empathy, mindfulness, and gratitude. This holistic approach aimed to shape our students into compassionate and considerate contributors to our school community.
Grade 3/4 Inquiry:
In our Physical Sciences unit students explored how heat can be produced and can move from one object to another. Students planned and conducted scientific investigations to find answers to questions, considering the safe use of appropriate materials and equipment.
In our Civics & Citizenship unit students were introduced to key aspects of democratic decision making and how decisions make an impact on people's lives. They learnt that rules are set for safety, fairness and inclusion. Students drew on personal experiences and familiar contexts to understand that democracy is ruled by the people and rules have a place in the community.
Performing Arts
This term, Grade 3 and 4 students explored the concept of narrative structure and character development by working in small groups to create a variety of short plays. They developed skills in improvisation and teamwork by using different stimuli as a starting point for their performances. They shared their short plays with their peers. Performing Arts finished the year with a bang when showcasing the musical talents of students’ from across the school at our end of year Kismet Christmas Carols picnic.
PE
Students have been introduced to a variety of major games. They have learnt how to play in a team and work with others. Students have played many ball games including netball, basketball and soccer. They have learnt the importance of listening to an umpire and accepting decisions. Students were beginning to show the strategies needed to improve their performance.
Japanese
This term in Japanese the Year 3/4 students developed their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through the topic “In my school bag”. They learned stationery vocabulary through a variety of activities and games. The students were supported to make a stationery mini book where they wrote simple Japanese words and sentences using hiragana (Japanese alphabet). The students also focused on forming the hiragana characters using correct stroke order.
The Year 3/4 students also learned about the cultural event, Health and Sports Day held in Japan and participated in a scavenger hunt to celebrate this event. They worked with partners to locate Japanese colours around the schoolyard.
