3/4O - TERM 4 IN THE BOOKS

Christmas Carols with Drew Lane

On the 24th of November, Drew Lane came to our school to teach us Christmas Carols. He gave some of us jobs like holding up posters and helping him dance. Afterwards, we did a whole school speed run through so we had an idea of the performance order. When everyone arrived at 6 o’clock, they had slushies, popcorn and other types of drinks. Everyone took a seat and watched the performance. Drew then called on some of the parents and teachers to come up and join in. All the parents and the children had a lot of fun at our Jingle Bell Jam Concert!

Billy Carts Incursion

On Monday the 20th of November all the 3/4s got to have an incursion with the Billy Carts team, Ryan and Rosie. There were three activity rotations: Build-A-Billy, testing creative constructions on a ramp and riding billy carts and ezy-carts. The ezy-carts were at first hard to use, but it got easier the more you used them. The billy carts needed 2 people: the driver and the engine. My group built a billy cart! We used wheels, bolts, washers and wing nuts to build the billy cart. For the creative construction activity, we needed similar materials to the ones used in Build-A-Billy. We had to make and then test our invention on a ramp. Some of us had really cool inventions. We all had a lot of fun at each activity!

Our time with our pre-service teacher: Miss Ella

Miss Ella is our student teacher on her placement. She is here for 20 days (4 weeks). She comes from the Australian Catholic University (ACU) and is learning a lot from Miss O’Halloran. She taught us all sorts of things, one day she even put us in university! We learnt a new spelling game invented by Miss Ella called ‘Phone A Friend.’ It is really fun because no-one can "get out." We have to work as a team and practise showing her favourite ‘R’ word, ‘RESPECT’. We will all be sad to see Miss Ella go, but we are all grateful that we got to help her learn how to be a teacher!

Cultural and Ethical Learning Focus

For reading in Term 4, we are learning about different cultures.  We got to learn about all the different cultural backgrounds that we share within our classroom. We had to be respectful and understanding of all of the cultures we learnt about in each activity. Some of the activities were exploring our own culture, learning about the cultural festivals celebrated by our peers and writing about the cultural characteristics of Australia and the First Nations Peoples.

University Day

We walked in one day after Specialists to find our classroom in a row by row layout. We were told it was now a lecture in ACU (Australian Catholic University) and we had become uni students. One of the lessons was to take notes about gravity, this was our lecture. When we took notes, they had to be the most important things and short and sharp. The following day, we had a tutorial lesson where we worked with our friends to fact check our information. After that, we used our plan to independently write our explanation text. We really liked having our tables in a different layout for our other lessons too!

Remembrance Day

For Remembrance Day, we learnt about The Great War (World War I). It was from 1914 to 1918. This day is commemorated to think about those who bravely fought in the war for our country, sacrificing their lives so we can stand on this land today. We learned about the meanings of different symbols like: the slouch hat, the rising sun badge, medals and the eternal flame. We then had to draw them on a classroom banner.

School Sports Day

Sports Day was really fun this term, everyone was there and we participated in so many fun activities such as:

-A relay

-Chicken toss

-Basketball

-Tug-O-War.

Noah from 3/4O came first in our 100m sprint. Everyone was SO puffed and had to drink lots of water when we went back to our classrooms. Lastly, we all went home to rest from that amazing day. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen!

Violin Concert

Some of the boys from Year 4 participated in a Violin Concert that was held on the 28th of November at Mazenod College. The concert was organised by Mr Cook and played music with some of the Mazenod boy students. We played ‘Toy Drummer’, ‘Manhattan Blue’ and ‘Sneaky Little Red Back’. It took us 4 entire lessons to perfect the pieces of music. The concert was really cool to play in!

Book Fair

This term we participated in the Lamont Book Fair! It was held in the library at SJV, organised by Ms. Laming and Mr. Hoare. Every book sold goes to raise money for the school and the library. Comic books, non-fiction and fiction books were sold. All of the students had so many books in their hands because we loved all the books and wanted to take them home! For example: Lia from 3/4O purchased the new Percy Jackson book. Ms. Laming said it was $25 because it was so new! Tara from 3/4O purchased two Bumble and Snug books, one was $17 and the other one was $15. What a great opportunity!

Parable Partners

This term, we worked in pairs on a creative retell of a parable. Parables are stories Jesus told to his disciples and friends, they tell people about God and we can find them in the Bible. A parable is a story that has a message and was re-written by different people including Mark, Luke, Matthew and John. We had to present our work creatively and in our own words. We could choose from options such as Google Slides, Google Docs, A3 Posters, Canva Posters, flip-books and chatterboxes.

First Eucharist

On the 11th and 12th of November, some of us made our First Eucharist. It was a wonderful event that took place in the SJV Parish. Our families came to support us and help us be brave because we were all a bit nervous to take the bread for the first time. We all got a pin with symbols of bread and wine on it and, after the Mass, we took a group photo with our pins on.
