Fabulous Foundation
Term 1 Week 6 - 7th March 2025
After a successful swimming program at Waves we are back into our regular routine. A big thankyou to all parent helpers that came throughout the 6 days. It was a huge help and the Prep Team greatly appreciated it.
Specialist classes have resumed and it is full steam ahead with literacy and numeracy. By now you will have received the blue reader/notice satchel that is to come to and from class each day and used for school notices or to send messages to and from teacher/parents. These will be checked daily.
Thankyou for your support in keeping toys at home. This helps to keep routines in the classroom positive and the learning environment with fewer distractions for everyone.
What we are learning!
Maths:
We are continuing our maths with numbers to five and then to ten. Exploring numerals, collections and words. We have been focussing on number formation and students have enjoyed using playdough and chalk in addition to pencils and whiteboards to write their numbers.
Literacy:
Literacy begins every morning at 9.10am. I am very impressed with the progress of students with their letter sounds and their focus during phonics sessions. Students are beginning to use their sound arms to sound out and blend CVC words. They are attempting to then write these words on their whiteboards. Many are managing this independently. We have so far learnt the sounds a,s,m,t,i,f,c,l,o,g & d. Please continue to use the flashcards daily with your child at home to support their learning in class. I will add new sounds in this newsletter as they are taught.
We are continuing with our novel study on the author Julia Donaldson. We have read the Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child & Room on the Broom, Stick Man and The Highway Rat. Students are now individually identifying characters, setting, problems and solutions within the texts. They are now writing the title of the story and with support writing about the characters and settings.
In writing we are exploring the importance of full sentences and not leaving out any words in our writing or verbal communication. Preps have enjoyed making silly sentences by leaving out a word. However, also understand the importance of communicating with a full sentence when writing or speaking.
Leader In me:
We are continually using the language of the 7 habits in the classroom. It is lovely to hear students using the 7 habits language in the classroom.
Inquiry:
Thankyou to the families that have sent in their family photo. These will be used in our inquiry session and then displayed on our family wall. If you haven't sent a phone in please kindly send it in ASAP to narelle.diggins@education.vic.gov.au
We will be exploring different emotions and how we feel in different scenarios throughout the term.
