Library News

Linda Mill - Librarian/Resource Centre Manager

There are some great activities and events planned for the library this year, and I look forward to sharing those with you here and on Instagram. You can follow us @norwoodlibrary to keep up to date with what’s happening.

Library Lovers a huge success

Library Lovers was hit. Over the two weeks we celebrated all things Library. Students could choose a mystery book from the lucky dip display to borrow and take home to read. The Genre and suggested age range was added to the front, but students didn’t know which book they had borrowed until they unwrapped it. All fiction genres were represented and it was fantastic watching students browse the display to pick a book. Their reactions once they unwrapped their book were really encouraging too. There were 141 books borrowed over that two-week period which was a fantastic effort. Well done everyone.

Library Volunteer Teams

At the beginning of this term, the call went out for students to apply to become Library Volunteers. Students were asked to commit to attending one meeting per term and their responsibilities will include assisting the Librarian by:

  • taking a shift on the front desk once per week for part of the lunch hour

  • helping to design and put together engaging library displays

  • suggesting and helping to select books from publishers

  • helping to plan and implement library events

The response was overwhelming with applications closing early as there were so many responses. From those applications, 15 students were chosen to be part of the initial team and the first meeting with Ms Mill, the Librarian, took place at recess on Friday, 21 February to discuss how they can be involved and to outline the expectations for being on the team. It has been a positive experience for students to have their first taste of working in a library. Watch this space for more details.

Library Clubs

Most days in the library there is the chance to join in one of the clubs that run during the lunch hour. If you’re looking for something to do, a way to make some friends or to just be creative, Library clubs are a great option. Here’s what’s currently available:

  • Lego Club. Lunchtime Tuesday’s. A chance to build the daily challenge or to come up with something from your own imagination.

  • Craft Club. Lunchtime Wednesday’s. Ms Walmsley will be offering students the opportunity to make beaded bracelets over the next few weeks. Other activities will be made available throughout the term.

  • Chess Club. Lunchtime Thursday’s. If you’re looking for a game, this is the place to be.

  • Homework Club. Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 3.15pm – 4pm. While not a lunchtime club, this is a good opportunity for students who need some extra help with their homework or classwork. Teachers are available to help at each session. You just need to sign in and out at the library desk.

If you have an idea for a new club, Ms Mill, the Librarian would love to hear from you.
