The Positive Impact of "Daily Deutsch"
As you know, we are always looking for innovative ways to enhance our opportunities for students to build on their German learning and not only access, but engage with the new language we are introducing above and beyond our single 50 minute lesson once a week.
We're excited to share the success of our Daily Deutsch initiative. Frau Chesterman has been integrating German into learning across Yrs 3-6 for some time now and Frau Edwards has now added this daily practice for our Mellor classes.
Tasks are quick and designed by Frau Chesterman and Frau Edwards to be managed by the classroom teachers without any additional preparation or understanding. They revisit German learning and provide another context in which to use language to build confidence and develop strong vocabulary retention. This has seamlessly integrated German language practice into our LNPS existing daily morning review routine.
With the support of our Year 1-6 classroom teachers, our students are exposed to German through quick, engaging slides alongside their regular literacy and maths reviews. The goal is to build confidence and fluency by providing frequent opportunities for practice and repetition.
The activities are simple and easy for classroom teachers to manage, with no prior German knowledge required. The activities range from listening and repeating audio clips and simple oral translations to matching vocabulary, practising spelling, and correctly using capital letters for German nouns. This consistent and low-pressure exposure to the language is helping our students develop their German skills and build a solid foundation of vocabulary.
The daily German review has sparked a new level of student engagement. By giving students regular opportunities to confidently show their existing knowledge, we have seen them become more eager to participate and ready to build on their understanding.
It's wonderful for them to share their German learning with class teachers and to see them so excited about doing German every day! A bonus is our non German-speaking class teachers are picking up some German by default!
Please ask your children about what they are learning in German and see if they can tell you about some of the Daily Deutsch and how it helps them to keep practising new vocabulary and feel more confident for their next German lesson.
