Prep Learning Reflection

This fortnight in Prep we've been lucky enough to have two wonderful incursions! We had the local police visit to talk about community safety and the roles they play in supporting the community. The students had a tour of a police van, played dress ups with police uniforms and learnt about the emergency services and different police vehicles.

We also had our annual RACV visit, where we learnt about road safety, car safety and identified different risks so that we determine safe places to play around the house.

In Literacy, we've been reading a wide range of non-fiction texts and learning about their features. This fortnight focused on contents pages and captions!

We've linked a lot of our writing other the information texts we've read, but have also written facts about safety to link our writing to our unit of work topic.

In phonics, we've been working on Unit 8 and 9 of SoundsWrite, which practices reading words where we are blending consonant sounds both at the beginning and at the ends of words (e.g. jump, spin).

In Numeracy, we've been learning to solve addition problems using the 'counting on' method and have been solving +1 and +2 problems.

When we solving a problem like 7 + 2, we can 'get the first number ready' by saying "seveeeen" and then count on twice "eight, nine"! 7 + 2 = 9.

We've also been learning about halves, comparing capacities and rotating 2D shapes.

Next week is Book Week! We'll be exploring some incredible short listed texts and discussing our favourites books and stories all week. On Thursday, we will have our Book Week Parade and students are asked to dress up a character from one of their favourite stories.
