Positive Minds Event

Aria Award Winning JK47 Performs

Wangaratta High School held its first Positive Minds event. While the event was originally planned to be on a stage truck on the oval, the wet weather meant we moved indoors to the basketball court—creating a great vibe mixing the Basketball game/BBBQ and hip hop performance together..

Students from VCE-V, supported by Alice Reynolds and Sal Kimber, curated the day and ran activities, including a barbecue fundraiser for the R U OK? campaign.

Our school nurse Geraldine provided health information on vaping and smoking and offered blood pressure checks for students and staff, while students displayed posters sharing positive mental health messages.

Harry Hilderbrand MCed throughout the entertaining and lively staff vs. students basketball game.

And the highlight of the event - a visit from special guest- acclaimed First Nations hip-hop artist JK-47, who flew down for the day from Tweed Heads, joined with Aunty Narelle Urquhart and others to host a yarning circle with some of our First Nations students.

JK-47 then performed an energetic and uplifting set straight after the basketball game—students listened closely at first before getting up to dance, while the barbecue kept running in the background.

It was a memorable day celebrating wellbeing, positivity, fun and connection, and we look forward to making Positive Minds Day an annual tradition in September - highlighting the multiple mental health messages of this month.

Thank you to Kev McGennan for capturing the event.
