Visual Arts

Last week in Visual Arts, students continued to explore their creativity through exciting construction projects!

  • Foundation students designed and decorated colourful cardboard pieces using lines, shapes, and patterns, then connected them together to build unique 3D sculptures.
  • Year 1/2 students kept adding to their hamster run mazes, carefully constructing ramps and tunnels, and even made their own little hamsters from a variety of materials.
  • Year 3/4 students progressed with their 3D cardboard houses, completing detailed drawings to bring one special room to life with character and style.
  • Year 5/6 students continued designing and constructing their miniature furniture and accessories, thoughtfully arranging them to bring their 3D rooms to life with detail and creativity.

Culture Studies

This week in Culture Studies, students continued their journey into the world of French culture by exploring one of the most delicious aspectsβ€”French cuisine! Together, we discovered some of France’s most iconic foods, such as flaky croissants, crusty baguettes, creamy cheeses, buttery pastries, and even the adventurous dish of escargot.Β

Β

After learning about these traditional foods and their place in French culture, students had the chance to become mini-chefsβ€”using modelling clay to create their own miniature French food masterpieces. From tiny baguettes to colourful macarons, their creations looked almost good enough to eat!Β

Β

This was a fun and creative way to connect culture, art, and imagination.

⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾🎾⚾               PE

AFL and Rugby finals are just around the corner so last week in PE students got a taste of Rugby by learning to play and understand the rules and skills of touch rugby. It included working with a different sized and shaped ball than what students are used to, and then passing and catching, throwing backwards while running forward and some more intricacies of the sport.

Students loved learning a new sport and working together to be successful.

Β

This week, students have gone back to some athletics training, mainly around shot put and discus so that they have some idea of how to perform these skills for our House Athletics day next Monday. It can be challenging to learn how to put a shot and throw the discus correctly to achieve your best results, but again students have enjoyed learning some new skills.

It has been great to get them ready for our House Athletics Day on Monday, which will be a great day of events, fun, enthusiasm, excitement and maybe even a little disappointment if students don’t receive a ribbon or do as well as they had hoped.

Students will come to school dressed up in their house colours and compete in the following events.

  • 100m race
  • Discus
  • Shot Put
  • Long jump
  • Triple jump
  • High jump
  • Gum boot toss

We would love to see as many family and friends their to support your child and their friends.

We are going to Dolamore Reserve, Mentone Athletics Club.

It might be a little wet, so make sure your child has a raincoat and warm clothes.

Students who are turning 9 this year or who are already 9 or older will compete to be invited to represent our school at the Kingston District Aths Day on Monday 15th September.

On Wednesday, we had Perform Education visit us and showcase three CBCA shortlisted books. Preps - grade 4s attended and absolutely loved it. The kids thought it was β€œ100% good”, β€œreal to their heart” and that β€œeverything about it was the best”.Β

Β

Β

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, some library leaders read picture books to younger children at lunch.

Β

Β

And Thursday, we had our huge Book Week Dress Up Day and Parade. Everybody put in so much effort and we had lots of fun dancing in the sun. Winners for best costumes were also crowned.Β

Β

For the rest of the term, Jen Hayes and I are running a writing workshop every Monday and Wednesday at recess in the library for the Kingston Libraries and Fish Creek Writing Competitions. We will be supporting interested students in writing and submitting their pieces at this time; however, stories can also be written and submitted at home. See these links for more information:

Renewed Focus on Music Education in Victoria – August, 2025

Recently, aΒ Ministerial Roundtable on Music EducationΒ was held in Victoria, bringing together key representatives from government, education, and the music sector. The purpose was to address the systemic barriers to providingΒ equitable, high-quality music educationΒ in government primary schools.

Β

Last week, I met withΒ Simon GullifordΒ (Senior Adviser to Natalie Suleyman MP),Β Luke StackΒ (Adviser to Parliamentary Secretary Katie Hall MP), andΒ Katie Hull-BrownΒ (music educator and President of VOSA) to discuss the following priorities:

Β

  • Equitable access to quality music education across all schools
  • Stronger partnerships between government, schools, and educators to support inclusive, well-resourced programs
  • Improved training and professional support for music teachers
  • Increased funding for music resources and infrastructure
  • Better integration of music across the curriculum, beyond the arts classroom
  • Support for diverse and inclusive music programs

Β

Luke Stack acknowledged that the Allan Government has heard aΒ clear and consistent messageΒ from the sector:

  • There is a shortage of confident, trained teachers
  • Time devoted to music is limited
  • Generalist teachers lack support
  • Access is inequitable across schools

Β

The sector also emphasised thatΒ music education plays a vital role in student wellbeing, aligning withΒ FISO 2.0.

Β

At the Roundtable, hosted by Deputy PremierΒ Ben CarrollΒ and MinisterΒ Colin Brooks, the Department of Education committed to three important next steps:

  1. Establish a working group to explore access solutions
  2. Develop an online collaboration platform for schools and the sector
  3. Integrate music and arts education into school strategic planning

Β

It’s heartening to see this renewed focus on music education in Victoria, paving the way for all children to experience the benefits of high-quality, inclusive programs which includes suitable funding for music rooms and musical equipment.

Grade 56B Instrumental Program with Cheltenham Secondary CollegeΒ

Students have done so well in the program this term. They have learnt to play their first song β€˜Hot Cross Buns’ all together – a great accomplishment. The students have been so lucky to have access to these orchestral instruments! Next term, grade 56C will take part in the program.
