Celebrating Spirit, Confidence, and Community

Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending our Years 5 and 6 Swimming Carnival—a day overflowing with energy. As I stood poolside watching our students splash, cheer and support one another, I was reminded of how powerful events like these are in strengthening both school spirit and wellbeing within our school community.

There was very obviously a buzz of excitement. For some, the day was about striving for personal bests; for others, it was simply about taking part and having fun. Days like these give students the chance to step outside the classroom and show their talents in different ways. Whether they were racing competitively, encouraging their peers from the sidelines, or celebrating house points, every student had an opportunity to contribute.

The wellbeing benefits were evident in so many small but meaningful moments: nervous swimmers gaining confidence after successful strokes, friends rallying around each other after races and the roar of support for their house colour. These experiences build resilience, encourage positive risk-taking, and nurture emotional connections that help students feel safe and supported - a message I always speak about when I address the Middle School community. These moments of friendship and sportsmanship play a huge part in enriching students’ social and emotional development and strengthen our culture of respect and inclusivity.

Being there for the very end, our students left feeling proud and more connected than when they arrived. I feel grateful to have witnessed such enthusiasm, courage, and joy. Thank you to Mr Locke and the staff who assisted across the day, the families for their support, and most importantly the students for making the day not only successful, but truly memorable.
