WRITERS' GROUP

STEIGLITZ TRIP

Earlier this term, the Oberon Writers’ Group once again hit the road for an immersive writing experience, this time to the ghost mining town of Steiglitz. Steiglitz was the site of a brief and lawless gold rush in the 1850s and 1860s and over the years the town has quietly fallen into ruin. After students arrived, they made a brief tour of the Steiglitz cemetery to look at several long forgotten graves, including the peculiar resting place of unlucky miner, Tom Judd.

Students then completed a walking tour and scavenger hunt of what remains of the town. Local guides, Lindy and Terry who are members of the preservation group, ‘Back to Steiglitz’, volunteered their time to share stories about the history of the courthouse, the blacksmith’s cottage and the church. Students then walked to the nearby recreation reserve where they produced a piece of writing about this fascinating location. Thanks to Mr Wardle for joining us on this trip.
