WHPS Swim Team 2026

Congratulations WHPS swim team of 2026!

1st Place- Wheelers Hill PS

For the 6th year in a row!

The annual MH District swimming competition was held at the Monash Aquatic Centre on Thursday 12th February. This year our swim team included 25 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 classes.

WHPS students competed against 5 other schools from our district of Monash Heights. The schools in this district include Mt Waverley, Jells Park, Mount Scopus College, Burwood East and Essex Heights.

Events included: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, as well as freestyle and mixed medley relays. Four of the eight WHPS relay teams qualified for the Division competition and many of our individual events swimmers also progressed through to Division level.

This year WHPS did not have a full team (with only 9 boys) and had to leave some of the event spaces empty. We also had some new team members who were quite nervous about their first inter-school competition. On the day the weather was not kind, with cooler conditions including some rain showers. A different timing system was being used- somehow relying on Wi-Fi connections that were not working smoothly. This meant that all swimmers were forced to patiently wait their turn until their event was called up to the marshalling area, often later than expected. The technical problems even led to the young 9/10-year-old back stroke swimmers having to swim their races twice. This will have certainly tired them out.

Nobody was expecting WHPS to win this year, with a smaller team. However, this small group clearly put in a mighty effort in the pool. Final scores had WHPS (on 69) just one point ahead of two other schools (on 68). This means we will be able to add the WHPS name to the Monash Heights District plaque again for 2026. Such a wonderful effort by this swim team. Our students should all feel very proud of their terrific achievements this year.

Students who placed in the Top 4 in their individual event or Top 2 for relay events will be given the opportunity to compete again at Division level on Wednesday 4th March at Boroondara Sports Complex, Balwyn. This year we have a large number of students representing the school at this higher level. Nine students swimming in individual events and we have four different relay teams too.

Many thanks to all senior school staff for their continued support and assistance during this busy first term. Special thank you to Erin B for coming along to help us out on the day. Thank you also to those parents who volunteered their time to assist, supervise, time, and support all our wonderful WHPS students.

Finally, well done to all students who participated in the 2026 Swim try outs and competition. We are always proud of the enthusiasm, peer support, manners, behaviour and sportsmanship displayed by our students. Well done, thank you and we hope that many of you will volunteer to be involved in the competition again next year.
