From the Principal

Good morning
On Sunday 8 March 2026, the annual celebration of International Women’s Day will acknowledge the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the globe.
This year’s theme is ‘Balance the scales’. It reminds us of the power of education, leadership, and opportunity in shaping a brighter, more inclusive future. At our school, we celebrate the incredible contributions of the women who enrich our community – from our teachers, staff, and parents to our inspiring students who demonstrate leadership, kindness, and resilience every day.
We also take this opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusiveness and diversity. Our strength as a community comes from embracing people of all genders, backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. By fostering an environment where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and respected, we empower our students to learn, grow, and contribute with confidence. Celebrating differences helps us develop empathy, understanding, and a sense of belonging for all.
Alongside this, we reinforce our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of every child. Child Safe Standard 5 emphasises that children are empowered to participate in decisions affecting them and are informed about their rights, including the right to feel safe and to speak up if something is wrong. At our school, we actively encourage students to share their voices, ask questions, and seek support from trusted adults. When children feel empowered, respected, and included, they thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
How you can support this at home:
- Talk with your children about their rights, safety, and the value of diversity and inclusion.
- Encourage them to speak up if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
- Celebrate the achievements of the women and girls in your life and discuss the importance of equality, respect, and acceptance of all.
Together, we can foster a school culture that celebrates diversity, empowers our students, and ensures safety for everyone. Let’s continue to create a community where every voice matters, every child feels included, and everyone is valued and protected.
Have a wonderful week everyone.

Dear Families,
Farewell
As this term draws to a close, I wanted to let you know that I will be finishing at the end of the term.
It is hard to believe that it has been almost 25 years since I first had the pleasure of becoming part of Mornington Secondary College.
Over that time, I have been fortunate to work alongside dedicated staff, wonderful students, and supportive families.
It has truly been a privilege and a joy to teach your children. Every day they bring energy, curiosity, humour, and heart into the classroom, and I feel incredibly grateful to have been part of their learning journey. Watching them grow in confidence, resilience, and understanding has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time here.
Some of you I have had the pleasure of knowing for many years, and it has been so special to see your children develop over time. Thank you for your trust, your encouragement, and the partnership we have shared. Your support has made all the difference.
I will carry many wonderful memories with me and feel very thankful to have worked with such remarkable young people and families.
Thank you!!!
Now for this week’s newsletter update:
In last week’s newsletter, I had a spotlight section on my Year 7 coordination team. This week, I would like you to learn a little bit more about my Year 9 Coordinators, Sian Jones and Kim Rattue. They are both committed and enthusiastic leaders who genuinely care about every student in the cohort, and they work tirelessly to support our students. I am very proud of them and all that they do. I hope you enjoy getting to know them through their fun profile questions and answers.
Sian Jones
Nickname: Siany
University attended University of Plymouth, UK
What did you enjoy about secondary college?
My favourite subject was History because we got to go away and visit the areas we studied in the Industrial Revolution. I enjoyed being with my friends and socialising. We also had some animals at the school so assisting with them was great too.
What do you love about teaching?
I love the relationships you build with your students and in my case, because I have been at MSC so long, seeing them progress through the school. You never know what the day will hold, its never dull. I particularly enjoy leading the Year 9s and so far this year’s cohort have been amazing.
Favourite food: Mexican and Indian.
What sport do you play?
I used to play netball at school right up till I was not tall enough to carry on being goal keeper.
What other activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy reading particularly novels with a twist. I enjoy watching crime dramas, going out to eat and drink and road trips in our van.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Around Byron Bay or Noosa, alternatively Hossegor in France.
Favourite clothing brand: I like many but at the moment I am liking Maje, and shopping online from a brand called Lui Jo.
Month born: January
Last concert: Foofighters
Favourite TV show: Currently enjoying Bridgerton, Shetland or Professor T.
Awards won: No awards won recently since I have been in Australia. I am however very proud of my two sons who both went to this school.
Kim Rattue
Nickname: Kimmy & Kimberly
University attended: Deakin University
What did you enjoy about secondary college?
I enjoyed all the sport opportunities that were available. We also had a year level where everyone got along, so we would all hang around together at recess and lunchtime, play basketball together, kick the footy on the oval and support each other over the weekends with our different sporting teams.
What do you love about teaching?
I love that every day is a different day, no day is the same. I love challenging my students and making learning fun and engaging . Sometimes it works and sometimes it’s a big fail, but each day brings something new. I also love my students, they become part of my family, particularly our Year 9 cohort this year.
Favourite food: Cheese. I love a good cheese board, load my pasta and taco’s with cheese and I love a good cheese toastie.
What sport do you play?
I used to play basketball and netball, right up until Covid hit and then my body realised is was too old and sore. I would have loved to play AFL but girls weren’t encouraged to play when I was younger. This year I am assistant coaching my Year 10 daughter in coaching a Frankston Blues U12 rep team.
What other activities do you enjoy?
I love reading, I devour crime and mystery fiction. I also love spending time with my three teenagers and I love cuddling and walking my dogs.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
I love living on the Peninsula, with all that is around us; beaches, forests, tourist destinations and local parks. I do sometimes fantasise about living on a deserted island with peace and quiet, warm weather and lots of friendly animals!
Favourite clothing brand: Nike, if only I could I would wear skins / legging and a t-shirt every day of the week.
Month born: August
Last concert: The MJ Musical – sensational!
Favourite TV show: Friends, although my youngest daughter is obsessed with it and I am pretty sure I now know every episode word-for-word.
Awards won: Over the years I have won many netball and basketball Grand-Finals and a few MVP’s. My greatest achievement is certainly my three children, all teenagers now.

Senior School
To students and families of the Mornington Senior School,
I trust you are well as you are reading this and looking forward to the long weekend. There are just 17 school days left this term for our senior school, Year 10-12 ATAR students and 10/11 days for our VM students depending on if they are in Year 11 or 12. So there is not a minute to waste. Our Year 12s certainly haven’t wasted any time looking amazing in their new Year 12 jackets which arrived just in time for some cooler weather!
Year 10-11 Road Smart Initiative
Our Year 10 and 11 VM students were lucky enough to take part in an interactive Road Smart initiative. The Road Smart Interactive is designed to reflect contemporary, best-practice approaches to road safety education. It utilises the latest immersive technology to guide our students through a series of experiences that engaged them in thinking about how they can be part of the solution to eliminating road trauma. Thank you to the work done my Michelle Barnes to organise the opportunity for our students.
Evidence of learning - completion of learning tasks
The core function of the senior school is to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning. This is primarily done through the completion of learning tasks which can take many different forms. I ran some data this week to see how our students are performing in terms of work completion and wanted to recognise the following 50 or so students who at the time of the report had zero or one overdue learning tasks. Obviously, this data fluctuates each time we run the report but in general, all tasks should be submitted by the due date. If you want to know how many learning tasks your child has overdue, please look at the learning tasks tab of their Compass dashboard, either through the app or website.
Congratulations to the following students and keep up the good work!

Edrolo update for VCE ATAR students
Almost 50% of all students who should have paid for their access to Edrolo have now done so and I urge families to finalise access for this terrific resource. The Edrolo use is one reason why our PE and Health classes consistently score well above state averages and why other subjects are improving their study scores year on year. Families can access the Edrolo portal by following the link in Compass (under the star icon). Instructions on how to subscribe for Edrolo can be found towards the end of the newsletter in this issue.
Study Tip of the Week:
When you are revising, study in 25–40 minute focus blocks. Short sprints. Phone out of reach. Brain fully engaged.
What is coming up this term in the Senior School?
Kind regards,
Nick Evans
Senior School Assistant Principal
NAPLAN Testing – Years 7 and 9
Over the next two weeks, students in Year 7 and Year 9 will complete their NAPLAN assessments, beginning on Wednesday 11th March. These tests assess student skills in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy.
NAPLAN provides an important opportunity for students, families and schools to understand how students are progressing in their learning. While it is only one snapshot of achievement, the information gained helps us identify strengths, areas for growth, and supports ongoing improvement in teaching and learning.
Students complete the assessments online, so it is important that they bring a fully charged laptop and a set of headphones to school on their testing days.
We encourage students to approach NAPLAN calmly and simply do their best. A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and arriving prepared will help students feel confident and ready to go.
Excursions and Duty of Care
When students attend excursions, the school’s duty of care remains in place for the entire duration of the activity. For this reason, students will return to school at the conclusion of the excursion and will be dismissed from school, rather than from the excursion venue.
This ensures that staff are able to properly supervise students and maintain clear responsibility for their safety until the excursion officially finishes.
We appreciate the support of families in helping us maintain safe and consistent procedures for all students during school activities.

Year 11 Wilsons Prom Camp 2026: Wind, Waves, and Wombats!
What a way to kick off Year 11 OES! Our trip to Wilsons Promontory last week was a true test of grit, and let’s just say these students didn't just pass—they crushed it. From battling the elements to catching the ride of a lifetime, here is the breakdown of an unforgettable week.
The surf conditions were... let's call them "character building." We faced some harsh winds, but the kids were absolute troopers. When the swell arrived, it was unbelievable.
The surf sessions were the clear highlight, seeing everyone get out there and tackle the waves. A special shout-out goes to Dane Hogarth, who took home the title for the highest wave count! Of course, we have to credit Mick Williams for that—his legendary competitive nature was the ultimate fuel to keep the kids paddling back out for "just one more."
We definitely put the "Outdoor" in Outdoor Ed last week. Whether we were on the sand or the trail, the pace was fierce. We had some seriously fast hikers this trip. Sam and Evan were flying, while Lacey and Nat were setting a cracking pace at the front of the pack!
We lucked out with a bright, sunny window at mount Bisop. The views over Squeaky Beach and Norman’s Beach were postcard-perfect.
While we didn’t get that golden sunset at Mount Oberon we’d dreamed of, a little shower of rain wasn't enough to stop us. The morale stayed sky-high despite the damp gear! We discovered we have a mini Bear Grylls among us; Henry was essentially a nature wiz! He was the first to spot most of our wildlife on our journey. When the legs got tired, we could always count on Chany and Baylin to hype our group up, keeping the vibes high and the energy flowing.
Now to our Dream Team. A massive thank you to the staff who kept the wheels turning and the spirits high:
- Mick Williams: The competitive spark and surf coach extraordinaire.
- Shine: Our amazing AFL trainee who kept the energy levels peaking.
- Madison Nicholls: thanks for organising the trip, and planning some amazing adventures these kids will hopefully never forget!
If this is how we handle "The Prom," then the Grampians doesn't stand a chance! Get ready for round two later this year.
Year 11 Biology
Our Year 11 Biology students have recently completed two practical investigations exploring the process of osmosis, giving them first-hand experience of how water moves into and out of cells.
In the first experiment, students created “naked” (de-shelled) eggs and placed them in water and varying concentrations of salt solutions. This engaging activity allowed students to observe changes in mass and volume, and to clearly see the effects of different solute concentrations. We were fortunate to have Ms Brindle visit during this lesson, providing students with a valuable opportunity to explain the experiment, osmosis, and discuss their findings.
The second investigation formed part of their School Assessed Coursework (SAC), where students used potato samples to quantitatively analyse osmotic movement across cell membranes. This experiment strengthened their understanding of concentration gradients, controlled variables, and data analysis.
It has been great to see students applying their theoretical knowledge in a hands-on setting.

Year 10 and 11VM Road Safety Education
Year 10 and 11VM Road Safety Education
This week, our entire Year 10 and Year 11VM cohort took part in Road Smart Interactive incursions, involving a series of interactive experiences designed to prompt reflection and empower them to be part of the solution to eliminating road trauma. These experiences included:
- Body Built to Survive - learning about crash force
- Designing a Safer Environment
- VR Road Trip to Zero
- Safer Behaviours Quiz
- Vehicle Design Crash Lab
- Global Road Safety
The program features elements adapted from the award-winning Road to Zero Experience at Melbourne Museum, providing a powerful platform for learning and discussion. It also offered a valuable opportunity for our educators to facilitate meaningful conversations about the role we all play in creating safer roads and a healthier school community.
Student-led action
In the final part of the experience, our students voted on the top actions that can be taken to improve road safety for your school community. This is what they said:
At Mornington Secondary College, keeping our students safe, informed, and empowered remains a priority, and initiatives like this are an important part of that commitment.

Boys Cricket
Our interschool cricket team had a fantastic start in their first 10-over match, defeating Westernport in a thrilling contest, 67 runs to 65. It was a terrific team performance, highlighted by Darcy Irving’s impressive 34 runs with the bat and Lucas Coutts’ outstanding bowling figures of 2/4 off just one over, which proved crucial in securing the win.
Unfortunately, in our second game we were defeated by Rosebud, who posted a strong total of 111 runs to our 57. Despite the result, there were some excellent individual efforts, including Mason Smith’s superb bowling performance of 3/9 off 2 overs and Jackson Ablett’s solid contribution of 12 runs.
Well done to all players for their effort and sportsmanship throughout the day!

Girls Volleyball
On Tuesday 3rd March the Intermediate Girls Southern Peninsula Division (SPD) Volleyball Championships were held at our stadium. It was a large competition with all six SPD schools representing. There were two levels in the competition with an A competition competing for the pennant with the winning team progression on to the SMR finals and a B competition for students who prefer a less competitive environment. The standard of play was very good throughout the day with very exciting rallies and a great positive and supportive vibe.
Our A team got off to a great start winning their first two matches against Rosebud 25-19 and Somerville 25-11. The A teams next three matches were against much stronger teams. The girls played exceptionally well but lost to Dromana 18-25, Western Port 11-25 and Mt Eliza 17-25. The girls last match against Mt Eliza was much closer than the score indicates with our girls leading the match halfway through. Our A team placed 4th overall in the competition with Mt Eliza winning the competition undefeated.
The B team got off to a hard start losing their first match against the eventual B competition winners Rosebud 3-25. The girls fought back in their second and third games posting wins against Western Port 25-20 and Dromana 25-21. The girls lost their next two games against Western Port 22-25 and Mount Eliza 11-25. The overall winners of the B team competition were Rosebud who were undefeated.
Both A and B teams represented the school with great enthusiasm and had a great time playing in their teams.

Boys Volleyball
Twelve Year 9 and 10 boys proudly represented MSC at the recent Volleyball Divisional Competition held at the Civic Reserve Recreation Centre. Competing in Group Two, the team faced strong opposition from Dromana, Western Port, Rosebud and Mt. Eliza. The boys performed exceptionally well, finishing the group stage with an impressive 3–1 record. With placings determined by overall points scored, MSC narrowly missed out on progressing to the final by just a few points.
In the consolation match, the team met a different Rosebud team in a closely contested game. After splitting the first two sets, MSC fell just one point short in a thrilling third set decider. Throughout the day, the boys demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork and determination, representing Mornington Secondary College with pride.

Success for MSC Students
Tasmania Tour
This weekend MSC students Jackson Ablett and Tom Milburn will represent Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL) in Tasmania. The MPJFL Tasmania Tour is an annual representative opportunity, bringing together selected Under 15 boys and girls squads from across the league to compete in interleague matches and showcase the region’s top emerging talent.
The boys’ squad of 24 players was selected from an invitation only training / trial program. Over the past five weeks, the squad has undertaken an intensive training program led by respected coaches Paul Hudson and Rick LeGassick, and included a day camp at the St Kilda Football Club training base at RSEA Park.
We congratulate Jackson, captain of the squad, and Tom, and wish them luck as they represent both the MPJFL and Mornington Secondary College.
We love sharing news of MSC success, both in and outside of school. Please share any exciting news with mornington.sc@education.vic.gov.au so we can spread the word to our broader MSC community.
Wellbeing
Junior Rangers
This week at Junior Ranges we started with a smoking ceremony and then broke off into two groups. First we learnt to make rope with Dianella grass and river reeds. The technique took some getting used to but the students did so well with this new skill.
Later in the day we walked through the sanctuary looking for emus and bandicoots, while other students stayed in the new refuge that was being made and assisted with setting out the planting and looking for natural materials to add into the refuge. Hopefully in the next few weeks Briars will have their first rescued animal to be housed there. We are looking forward to seeing this new refuge take off.
Next fortnight our Junior Rangers students will return to Police Point for more learnings and adventures.

Edrolo subscription for VCE ATAR students
Some subjects in Year 11 and 12 have a learning enhancement that families are strongly encouraged to purchase based on the results seen by students with high usage of this program. Health & Human Development (Units 1-4), Physical Education (Units 1-4), Physics (Units 1-4), Psychology (Units 1-4) currently have access to these resources. We have now added Art Making & Exhibiting, Media and General Math. There is an expectation that students hoping to succeed in VCE will access this resource. Students will have access for a few short weeks without paying and then it becomes unavailable (until payment is made).
For families to subscribe to this resource at the school negotiated rate of $35 per subject (reduced from $20 per month for one subject or $40 per month for all subjects for single subscribers), families need to:
1.Go to https://edrolo.com.au/ and click on the activate button (see below) and then enter the schools activation code - cza-eqx.
2.Then follow the prompts to setup your account. For students who have already created an account in previous years, you simply login (you’ll need to use your current school email).
3.For students who have an account they’ll see this on entry…
4.Then families can proceed to the payment screen to finalise access and support their child’s VCE success.
The sooner payment is finalised, the sooner students can start maximising their VCE performance.
