3/4 Classrooms
Good grief! We think the last half of this term could qualify as the busiest in history. A huge congratulations to all students who have shown resilience and perseverance while navigating a range of changes to their routines. We love seeing the way you have supported your friends, encouraged one another and given things that are often outside of your comfort zone a go. We couldn't be prouder!
Coming out of our dress rehearsal and then four performances of La Música Viajera, students dove straight back into learning (and fabulous Book Week costumes!)
In Spanish: we are nearing the end of our persuasive units and the students are writing vigorously to finish their texts. They're writing persuasive texts that aim to convince the reader to visit their chosen Latin American landmark or monument. Alysha and Sole are travelling at the end of the year, and have left their travel plans unto the dangerous hands of their clever, conniving, convincing students. Will they ever be seen again? Not if they end up at the top of a mountain in Peru or sacrificed in a pyramid in Mexico...
Travel outcomes confirmed next year, if their classroom roles are overtaken by the tyrannous Sir Basil Pesto and Mr Tiger Paatsch Rubio.
Nevertheless, persuaded and travelled they will be!
In English, we are undertaking a book study of Wonder. We have continued looking at the perspectives of different characters and how their own life experiences can alter their perceptions of different scenarios. These discussions have led us to consider how these ideas impact our own world – how important is it to show kindness to the people around us, especially when we don't know what they may be experiencing in their personal lives? In addition, students have been undertaking in-depth discussions around character actions and finding evidence to support their written responses.
In our writing block, students have continued flexing their persuasive muscles to convince us of topics they feel strongly about. These topics range from:
- Only having to go to school three days a week
- Why we should go to school every day (including the weekend!)
- Why dogs are greater than cats
- Why books are better than movies
- Why our school should have an ice cream shop (this is my personal favourite. Luke, I hope you are reading this!)
Our writing has been strengthened by the inclusion of strong modal verbs, the introduction of complex sentences and the use of text connectives.
In mathematics, we are beginning to wrap up our multiplication and division unit. Students have been working on a number of strategies to build their mathematician toolbox to solve problems involving multidigit numbers and complicated, multi-step worded problems. We even showed off a little and conquered some long division!
