Another Great Week at Newlands!
Hi All,
It has been another fantastic week at Newlands, with plenty happening across the school!
We have been lucky enough to welcome some amazing authors this week. On Wednesday, Nova Weetman visited our Grade 5/6 students, sharing her experiences and insights as an author. On Friday, Nat Amoore joined our Grade 1/2 and 3/4 students, sharing her stories, plenty of laughs and some wild insights into her writing process. It has been wonderful to have authors connecting directly with our students and continuing the excitement around reading and writing.
Bilingual School Leaders – New Initiatives!
Our Bilingual School Leaders have some exciting new initiatives planned for Term 4!
Firstly, after all the money raised through Icy Pole Fridays in Term 1, we will be putting some of those funds straight back into supporting our students. We will be purchasing fidgets for every classroom, as well as a range of new games and activities for our Wellbeing Hub.
We would also love some help from our families! If you have any spare or unwanted fidgets sitting around at home, we would happily take them off your hands. There is now a bucket labelled ‘Fidgets’ at the front office where donations can be dropped off. One small request. Please, no squishies! As much as we love them, they have a habit of exploding at exactly the wrong time and creating a little more excitement in classrooms than we need!
The Bilingual School Leaders are also launching something completely new in Term 4 – the Newlands Talent Show! Auditions will take place during recess and lunchtimes early in Term 4, as we search for some of Newlands’ hidden talents ahead of a big school showcase. Singing, dancing, comedy, magic, music... who knows what we are going to discover! More information will be coming very soon.
Sport, Sport and More Sport!
The last week has also been incredibly exciting on the sporting front. Brunswick Lacrosse visited Newlands and gave our students the chance to experience lacrosse – including a lunchtime students-versus-teachers game where, unfortunately for the teachers, the students absolutely dominated!
The Darebin Falcons also ran girls’ football clinics for students from Foundation to Grade 6. It was fantastic to see so many girls getting involved, having a go and enjoying their football.
We have also had students experiencing fencing, with classes taking part in introductory sessions and a lunchtime demonstration that attracted a huge crowd. There has already been plenty of excitement about fencing potentially becoming part of our Term 4 program!
Last week’s PE lessons also featured Muay Thai, giving students another completely different sporting experience to try.
All of this has created plenty of discussion around the school about one very important question: Which Before School Club are you joining in Term 4? We can't wait for our Sign-Up Morning and to see our students trying something new next term.
This week, we also had the opportunity to present to School Council about our progress as a school, celebrating what we have achieved so far and the incredible work happening across Newlands. Just as importantly, we shared what comes next and some of the exciting priorities and initiatives that will continue to move our school forward.
DELE Exams
Finally, we are incredibly excited that more than 30 Grade 6 students are preparing to participate in the DELE Spanish examinations.
The DELE provides students with an internationally recognised accreditation of their Spanish proficiency across reading, writing, speaking and listening. For our students, this is an incredible opportunity to demonstrate just how far their Spanish language skills have developed throughout their time at Newlands.
It is another exciting milestone for our bilingual program and something our Grade 6 students should be extremely proud to be working towards.
There is certainly never a dull week at Newlands!
