A Kaleidoscope of Feelings: Our Colour Journey

In Preschool Yellow the classroom has been filled with colour, wonder and rich conversation as the children explore their current line of enquiry into Kaleidoscopes. 

Using the beautiful book The Colour Monsters by Anna Llenas as a starting point, the children have been investigating the connection between colour and feelings. They have been discovering that yellow can mean joy, blue can represent calm, red can show anger, and green can express peace. They have extended on this by expressing their own emotions through painting, colour mixing, storytelling, and dramatic play.

True to the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, the teachers have listened closely to the children’s ideas and followed their curiosity. This has recently taken the enquiry in a beautiful new direction: searching for patterns and colours in nature. The children have been captivated by rainbows after the recent rainfall, the changing colours of leaves with the seasons, and the intricate patterns found in flowers, shells, and butterflies. They are collecting specimens, creating observational drawings, and building their own kaleidoscope inspired art pieces using natural materials.

This child-led journey highlights the Reggio Emilia belief that children are capable researchers who construct knowledge through meaningful experiences, collaboration, and multiple ways of expressing their thoughts. Our teachers are proud to walk alongside them as co-learners, documenting their theories and supporting their growing ideas.
