School Nurse

We are Carol and Ali, your friendly School Nurses.  We love our job here at Mt View and although most days are very busy, our role is interesting and varied.

Our day starts with checking all the First Aid bags for yard duty to make sure they are well stocked for the day ahead. We also make sure the larger First Aid kits and crate are stocked ready to go for Interschool sport, Excursions and Camps.

Our most important role is looking after sick or injured students or staff, and we see lots of conditions in our day for example -

  • Minor illnesses -tummy aches, sore throats, gastro , coughs and colds which often  get better with a rest and a heat pack, if not we send them home
  • Minor injuries- such as bumps, bruises, rolled ankles, jarred fingers, sprains and strains which need icepacks, rest. Band-Aids or bandages
  • More serious conditions - broken bones, lacerations, heart issues or seizures which require a trip to hospital.
  • Ongoing conditions that require nursing care or medicine every day.

We see around 25-40 children a day and we go through a lot of Band-Aids and Ice packs!!

We do lots of other things apart from First Aid……

  • Student Wellbeing- sometimes students need different care or attention due to social or emotional issues such as stress, anxiety, friendship struggles or difficulties adapting to change at school or home .
  • Documentation-If your child has Asthma, Anaphylaxis, Allergy or a Medical Condition we will ensure that we have all the necessary documentation and up-to-date care plans for your child. We help in the planning of school excursions, camps and overseas trips to ensure the wellbeing of the students.
  • Education is another part of our job, and we educate both students and staff in a variety of ways for example - Health Promotion is lots of fun such as Healthy Bones Week which teaches the children about healthy bones and they get milkshakes at recess!! We organise First Aid and CPR courses for staff and provide education as needed on specific conditions to ensure your child receives the best care in the school.
  • Communication- we really enjoy supporting and communicating with our school community to let them know current health issues for example outbreaks of chickenpox, gastro or slapped cheek, and how parents can help us in looking after their children. Our best advice is to keep your children at home if they have vomiting, diarrhoea or fevers for 24 hrs after their last episode.  Your child feels better at home, and it protects the wider school community from catching it. There are some children and parents in our community who have serious health concerns so to catch some of these illnesses could be dangerous.

Before working at Mount View, we both had our children here and one of the things we enjoyed and appreciated was the fact our children had access to a School Nurse every day!  We hope we have given you a snapshot of our day in the Health Centre and feel free to pop in as we are here Mon-Fri from 10.15 to 3.15.
