Intermediate Baseball

After months of training, the intermediate baseball team had its divisional finals last week. We went to Presidents Park to compete against Manor Lakes in a single must win match. It was a tough game since none of our team had played baseball before and Manor Lakes had multiple state players. But the team fought hard, eventually losing by one run. Congratulations to Jay for being top run scorer, Viraaj for taking a couple of great catches in centre field, Sachiv, Riley and Aryan for pitching and Moises for playing catcher. A big thanks to Ms Fenby for coaching us.

Senior Baseball

On Tuesday 20th February the Senior Boys Baseball team played in the Wyndham Division. Twelve students were selected for the team. Our match was against Manor Lakes, to progress to regionals. Throughout Transition in T4 2023, we practised hard about twice, nearly thrice a week, and continued throughout T1 until our big match. We travelled to Presidents Park with all three competing teams: the inters, seniors, and the senior softball team. As we walked out we saw the other team warming up, and they looked better than expected. The first game was our Inter team so we sat outside and cheered them on. Zayan, our captain, longstanding player Srikar, our star coach Ms Fenby and I kept rotating around the outside of the field coaching them and helping them with the more technical and strategic side of the game. As the inters wrapped up their game (going down 2-1 😒) we started warming up. Around this time, our Girl’s Softball team also began their match and played extremely well. Unfortunately, they were not able to secure the win due to an early call made by the umpires, but they deserved to win.

We fielded first. In the infield we had Ramika at 1B, Harjoban at 2B, Srikar at 3B, Devesh at SS and arguably the greatest motivator and best captain we could have had, Zayan, on the mound, Akshya as our top catcher, and as for outfield, it doesn’t matter. No, I’m kidding; we had Dhyey and Emmanuel in RF, Liam in CF, and Mahin holding up LF, as well as Pranav in the bullpen and Om ready to pinch run.

As we were starting the first innings, the first batter came up to the box. I signalled where to throw the first pitch,  but it was out of the zone 💀, and went straight onto the other side of where I was set up. I walked straight up to the mound and said “Zayan, no more dillydallying or codswalloping. It’s time to lock in.” We both centred our heads, shook it off and took our positions. I signalled for an inside fastball and it arrived right there, perfectly framed and it’s a STRIKE. Two more pitches go by and now it’s a 2-2 count. The signal comes for a sinker and he throws just that. Swing and a miss! The batter is OUT. Now our heads are up and we are ready, side-eyeing the next batter as he walks in we are ready to get him and grab this innings in our favour. The first pitch comes up and … BOOM this huge weightlifter-looking dude has just hit a walk-on bomb. 350ft Dead Centre. So those high hopes have slightly deteriorated. Just slightly. The next guy comes up to the plate. Three swings and a miss? What is going on? Zayan is just on fire. The fourth guy steps up, now mind you this guy said that he wasn’t a batter, he simply said that he was their best pitcher. I signal outside curveball. Zayan throws and he hits the poor guy. Hmmm, coincidence? Perchance. Now he’s on base.

The next guy steps up and the ball flies way past the catcher, giving the runner the chance to steal second. Two balls come through, and now he’s on a full count. Lower fastball signalled. I drop the ball and the batter bolts to first. Now there are two runners on base. Another batter reaches and it’s bases loaded. I approach the mound and say ‘It’s make or break time.’ A few amazing pitches by Zayan and a couple of unlucky calls go by so now we are at a full count. NOW it’s make or break time. The pitch is called, batter ready, ball comes through and… it’s a GRAND SLAM.

Bottom of the first inning and they are leading by four (OH ****). What I didn’t mention before was, the reason that they were so good is that their leading pitcher and hitter is an MLB prospect and plays for an Australian underage team (I’m not kidding; it was kinda unfair icl…) and their catcher plays for the state team; so do a couple of their other players.

We’re up. First batter strikeout. Uh oh. Mahin steps up to the plate. He reaches base (FINALLY). Then we have Ramika coming in, another base hit. Now we have two runners on. Dhyey follows, another base hit. BASES ARE LOADED, our best chance to close this gap! Team Captain and ALL STAR Zayan steps up to the plate. Now for some reason, this pitcher cannot pitch to left-handed batters, and fortunately, Zayan is a lefty. He takes the first two pitches. Two balls, what an eye! Next pitch swing and a miss, followed by an unlucky strike call but saved with a ball. Now we have an interesting turn of events. We have a full count with bases loaded. IT’S GAME TIME! But … strikeout. That’s slightly demoralising but we have another chance. I say ‘put me in Coach, I call first hit on him’ but Coach says to spare the big guns for next innings. So Devesh goes in to bat. After a couple of foul tips, unfortunately he strikes out. So that’s the innings and we are down by four. But guess what, this story AIN’T OVER YET. First batter comes in, hits a bomb, 5-0. Next one takes second, steals third and gets home, 6-0. The next two batters strike out and finally we think we have a hold on them. Until, the next three of them score, 9-0 (is this just batting practice for them?)

Now the next guy comes to the plate, consecutive foul tips are destroying my hand. Ms Fenby asks if I want to swap for another catcher, but I say ‘IT AIN'T OVER TILL IT'S OVER!!’ The next three pitches are all balls, and I’m just constantly getting thumbed (it might be time to switch positions guys). Somehow we manage to finally strike this batter out. I rush off the field with my injured right hand to take my gear off and get ready to bat. The pitcher approaches his mound and I set up. First pitch is a low inside fastball nearly clipping me. Second one is foul tipped and so is the third. These foul tips are really hurting my left hand where most of the pressure is. Finally the count is full, and I’m ready to send this ball to the black hole in the centre of our galaxy. I ready up and he throws the slowest changeup in existence. But I still swing and miss it. The next batters strikeout as well, so now we are in our final inning.and the girls team who recently got done with their match is cheering for Zayan yelling “31 (his jersey number) GET IT DONE” except they start chanting right when he was about to release the ball so the batter smashes it through left field. Well, then they score more runs for a total of 12-0. At this point, the umpire calls the game and that’s that. Despite us getting thrashed it was still a memorable and joyful experience for us all, especially for the year 12s who won’t be able to play next year.

On the way back we talked and talked until we got to school and the entire day was just a really fun and eventful time, and I would 100% do it again with our team. I cannot think of a better captain, teammate and cheerleader all in one than Zayan! Could not have done it without him, and the best Coach anyone could ever ask for in Ms Fenby.
