News from 5/6

Week 3 already! The 5/6s are certainly off to a flying start with their learning. After assessment in the first couple of weeks, we have dived into all areas of the curriculum. We are reading ‘The War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo as our novel study in English and we are focusing on handwriting (and making sure this transfers to our writing across the board).

Writing

In writing, we have been learning how to enhance our sentences using appositives.  An appositive is a noun group that defines the noun.

Here are some of the sentences that our cheeky students would like to dedicate to Mr Foley:

Mr Foley, a preppy pink princess, flew to Sephora to get more skin care for his wrinkles. - Harper

Mr Foley, a great sport teacher, taught an oval of 5/6 chickens to play cricket. - Sophie B

Mr Foley, a pretty pink princess, jumped out of the airplane with his magical fairy wings and made a lovely rainbow with his fairy wand.- Danica

Mr Foley, a tough man, skipped merrily around the oval while unicorns were flying around him. - Clara

Homework

We had a class meeting during the week about homework (which can be found in the parent handbook). In 5/6, it is expected that students complete 20-30 minutes a night of independent reading (recorded by them) and at times, research for current topics as discussed in class and Maths facts as needed. We are focussing on times tables this term and there are a whole lot of resources that the student’s can access at home via the Google Classroom. Here is a link to Times Tables.com and also Math Magician to get started on some practise at home!

Buddies

The Year 5’s have enjoyed taking on their role of ‘buddy’ with their new Foundation friends! They have been assisting their buddies to move around the school and make sure they are happy, safe and have someone to play with outside. We will continue to have special buddy activities and at least for the next few weeks, they will continue to help their buddies during morning huff ‘n’ puff and so on.
