Year 6 Term 2 Curriculum Outline

WOMINJEKA

Term 1 flew by so fast and the Year 6 team are looking forward to another fantastic term of learning and growth with our students. We appreciate all your support in ensuring students are prepared, well-rested and ready for each week.

Term 2 Learning:

Reading

In Reading, students will be exploring the author’s craft in non-fiction texts, specifically biographies and autobiographies. They will reflect on the techniques and structures author’s use to write engaging biographies, reflect on a writer's use of words, images, language (figurative), and connectives and how these add to the meaning, quality, mood and tone and the enjoyment of a text. They will be learning these techniques as part of a literacy block to link these ideas into their writing. Students will also be exploring effective research skills and using these to find information that they will use to write a biography on a chosen subject.

Writing

In Writing, the students will be applying their learnings in reading into their writing. They will be researching their own lives and creating an autobiography that has a theme and greater message. They will apply the structure and features that are within biographical writing and use them to expand on the significance of events within their own life. They will use 6+1 traits such as ideas, organisation, voice, word choice and sentence fluency to further enhance their writing.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students will continue to explore fractional thinking in a variety of ways. They will begin the term exploring length, area, and perimeter as well as 3D shapes, volume and capacity. They will be applying their understanding in a variety of ways including creating buildings and calculating size requirements in Minecraft Education. In the second half of the term, students will be developing their understanding of order of operations and then also time. They will learn to solve equations using brackets using the properties of numbers as well as begin to design and use algorithms. In the time unit, students will measure, calculate, interpret, and compare elapsed time and use timetable and itineraries to plan activities.

SEL

This term our Social and Emotional Learning will focus on and develop students understanding of:

  • What is identity?
  • How are people different and how are they the same?
  • What is the difference between equity and equality?
  • How can we build and maintain respectful relationships?

This work will be done during SEL lessons as well as during yarning circles and incidental discussions in the classroom.

Inquiry

Within Inquiry sessions and across all curriculum areas, we will be exploring the concept of:  Multicultural Australia is complex because of the laws they are governed by and the communities that exist within Australia. We will support students to make connections between their migration stories and those of others. We will explore the stories of people who migrated to Australia throughout history. We will then develop an understanding of what it means to be Australian, as well as the rights, responsibilities and laws that impact anyone who calls Australia home.
