Term 2 Curriculum

Term 2 is off to an amazing start. All year 5 classes have settled in and have gotten straight back into their work. As the weather cools, please remind your child to pack their school jumper, gloves, beanies, etc. Whatever they need to keep themselves warm.

This term we welcome Julia who is working in 5F, while Anne is on her much deserved Long Service Leave. We are extremely lucky to have Julia join us all the way from Canada. Please make Julia feel welcomed. 5F have settled in beautifully with the change.

Reading

This term in reading, Year 5 students will be spending time exploring non-fiction and fiction texts and the language features and text structures found throughout these texts. Students will be analysing and investigating word choice used by authors and looking at different strategies to comprehend new language such as using a thesaurus. Students will work on paraphrasing, clarifying vocabulary, exploring how their thinking changes as they learn new information and how they can use this new information to form judgements and predictions, comparing and contrasting, and inferring. Students will continue to work on questioning as they are reading text. Students will explore how to become clear and concise summarisers and how to present a summary orally as well as in a written form.

Writing

This term in writing, Year 5 students will spend the term exploring and writing Discussion Text. This is the first time they have been exposed to Discussion Text in their schooling. This is the next step in persuasive writing where they put forth two perspectives, instead of just one.

Throughout the unit on Discussion Text, students will explore the structure, features and purpose of these texts, as well as how to write for an intended audience. Students will write texts that present arguments that show two perspectives, supporting detail for each argument and focusing on Pathos, Logos, and Ethos for their chosen topic. Students will get to show their student voice through choosing their own topic and exploring creative ways to present their text, such as videos, debates, letters, documentaries, posters, etc.

Mathematics

This term in maths, Year 5 students will revisit concepts of Operations and Financial Maths. Students will explore the addition and subtraction of whole and decimal numbers. They will also look at the connection between multiplication and division and appropriate strategies for solving these problems. Students will develop efficient strategies in all four operations - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division for written and mental problems. They will use rounding and estimating, and their knowledge of odd and even numbers to assist answering problems. Students will create a simple budget.

We will also be exploring Measurement in length, perimeter, area, 3D objects, volume, capacity, mass, transformation and properties of shapes. During this learning, they will choose appropriate metric units, solve problems, estimate, construct and measure angles.

Students will explore a variety of strategies for solving problems, with the focus remaining on students justifying their answers and being able to show and explain their working out and reasoning.

Throughout each of these areas we seek to build a deeper understanding of each concept, honing problem solving skills and strategies that allow our students to make connections between mathematical concepts and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar problems.

Inquiry

This term in inquiry, Year 5 students will be exploring the question, ‘What significant events brought change and shaped Australia that led to Federation?’ We will be exploring these questions throughout our History unit. Students will have the opportunity to learn about each decade from 1788 to 1901. They will look at perspectives, cause and effects of the event, who was involved, what happened during the event and to indigenous people, impacts the event may have had on the environment, impact of migration and if migration was forced or voluntary, and how each of the events led to Federation.

Home Learning

Your child has home learning tasks are:

  • Reading and recording this in their diary
  • IXL for Literacy and Mathematics
  • Working on individualised goals

Your child’s individualised learning goals are listed on Compass. Please read your child’s goals and support them by using the strategies that their teacher has recommended, to help at home. These goals are changed every five weeks (twice a term), and you will also be informed of your child’s achievement of these goals.

Daily Home Reading

The expectation is for your child to read their take home book for a minimum of 30 minutes per night, 5 times a week.  To support your child in comprehending the texts, you can ask some comprehension questions, summarise what they have read or use the home reading strategy provided for goals. It is also an expectation that students record the title, date and write a comment in their student diary.. These are checked by the teacher. Please ask your child or speak to the teacher about the day this is checked as every class is different.

Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you require any further information.

Thank you for your continued support.
