Kitchen Garden

3L

3L have begun their kitchen garden sessions this term.

Their first session was learning all about composting.

To begin, they had a garden wander to find all the compost bins and worm farms.

Together we spoke about what goes in compost and how to make a compost pile.

Everyone worked together in groups to create mini compost bins in glass jars which they will observe over the term, then we made a ‘normal size’ compost pile in the wheel barrow to help everyone visually see the layers being added.

Thank you to all the special helpers who came along to join in the fun with the students.

                                                                         Session 2

3L’s second session in the garden was a busy one!

In groups students worked together completing various garden tasks with volunteers, learning lots of new skills.

The Grapes worked with Allesha, planting broccoli and cabbage seedlings.

The Blueberries worked with Deb, filling origami seed packets with seeds saved from plants in the garden.

Oranges worked with Di, ‘hilling up’ cabbage plants with compost and added a layer of coffee grounds to the compost bins.

The Pears worked with Alana, to clear a spent summer garden bed and dug the soil over to loosen and aerate it.

The Apples worked with Peta, stuffing and stitching 2 scarecrows to add to the garden scarecrow family.

Thank you, once again, to the amazing parents, grandparents and community members who come along and share the kitchen garden experience with the students.
