Melbourne Writers Festival

Melbourne Writers Festival.

Year 10

On Monday 2nd May, Year 10 classes and 3 teachers met on the steps of the State Library to attend the 2024 Writers’ Festival.

We had a variety of writers discuss their inspirations, methods and approaches to writing.

They were Steve Mushi and Ultra wild, a creative graphic text, Astri Scholte and her “Four Dead Queens’, Biffy James and Completely Normal (and other lies), and Mike Lucas discussing Getting the Fright Right’ and the Horror genre.

Following are some of our students comments:

"Personally, I found his (Steve Mush) ideas fascinating and entertaining to listen to because he not only imagined what could be, but found out how it would work and how to make it happen. He found a way to make flying bicycles work, and I thought that was pretty cool".  (Leila)

"The festival was quite enjoyable with many new ideas and concepts that was introduced to the audience" (Leon)

"Overall, it was a brilliant time where a lot of wisdom and experiences were shared which has helped myself and likely others adapt in the way that I think and look at the world and my life". (Anabella)

"I found the final presenter the most intriguing as he gave us real tips on writing, so even if we didn’t see writing as a career, we knew how to improve what we already had". (Audrey)

"Out of all the speakers I heard from, my favorite one was probably Mike Lucas, who’s presentation was named “Getting the Fright Right”. I liked it because unlike the other writers he clearly explained his genre and didn’t promote his book too much (Edwin)
ALSO: There was a lunch break in which I went a couple blocks up to get ramen, it was delicious but very filling, I couldn't finish the dish it was that rich". J

A good day was had by all and we look forward to next year’s offerings.

Thanks, to Fiona Ellis and Shandelle Feduniw for their support.

Year 9

On Tuesday 7th Year 9 Enhanced English class attended the Melbourne Writers Festival at the State Library. The students listened to talks from four writers about their craft. Students also had the chance to meet the authors and have their books signed afterwards. All enjoyed the experience of meeting ‘real life’ writers and reflected on how they could apply their writing tips to their own creative pieces next term.

‘We got to learn about different writing styles and how creative thinking can be used positively.’ (Jack)

‘The Melbourne Writers Festival was an eye-opening experience for all of us and highlighted the amount of creativity that authors put into a novel.’ (Adam)

Thank you to Mr Hazelbank and Mr Adams who accompanied us on the day.
