Junior School Director Update

Thursday 7 August 2025

Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

As we reach the midpoint of Term 3, it’s incredible to reflect on how quickly this year has flown by. Despite the challenges that come with the colder weather and settling back into routine after a long Term 2, our Junior School students have met every hurdle with resilience and determination. Throughout the term, they have consistently embodied the school values of personal best, integrity, respect, and responsibility — values that continue to guide their learning and growth.

Year 7 Students: Finding Their Place and Growing Stronger

Our Year 7 cohort has had a fantastic start to their secondary school journey. Over the past few months, they have settled well into life at Mordialloc College and are gradually developing a strong sense of belonging within the school community. This connection will only deepen as they move through the years, eventually taking on leadership roles when they reach Year 12. While the journey may seem long now, our current Year 12 students assure us that the time passes faster than expected!

One of the highlights for our Year 7 students this term has been their participation in mental health workshops during Mentor lessons. These sessions were designed to equip them with practical strategies to manage the pressures of increasing academic expectations and the social changes they are experiencing. Transitioning from primary to secondary school can be both exciting and overwhelming, and these workshops have proven invaluable in helping students navigate this period. The feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the opportunity to discuss their feelings and learn tools to support their wellbeing.

In addition, just this week, our Year 7 students received their NAPLAN results. The results were handed out in sealed envelopes for students to take home and review with their families. We encourage parents and guardians to take the time to look over these results and discuss them with their child, celebrating their successes and identifying areas for growth as we move forward.

Year 8 Students: Growing Maturity and Preparing for the Future

Our Year 8 students are beginning to show increasing maturity as they prepare to transition into Middle School next year. A significant milestone for them this term has been the subject selection process for Year 9 in 2026. This process has given students the chance to take ownership of their learning and tailor their educational experience to their interests and goals. It’s a wonderful step towards fostering independence and responsibility in their academic journey.

Excitement is building among Year 8 students for the upcoming Medieval Day incursion, scheduled for next Tuesday. This immersive experience will transport students back to the Medieval period, providing hands-on learning about historical life, including armour, the Battle of Hastings, Medieval games, apothecaries, and even Medieval dance. Such engaging activities enrich the curriculum and bring history to life in a fun and memorable way.

Sporting Achievements and School Spirit

Both Year 7 and Year 8 students have continued to participate enthusiastically in their weekly sports programs. Several teams have had the opportunity to represent Mordialloc College in competitions against other schools. These teams have not only showcased great skill and determination but have also displayed outstanding sportsmanship and respect towards their opponents — qualities we are incredibly proud of.

Looking Ahead

Term 3 promises to remain action-packed and full of learning opportunities. As the weather continues to cool, we encourage students to keep up their efforts both inside and outside the classroom. We also remind families to stay engaged with their child’s education by ensuring they are prepared for upcoming events, supporting their participation in activities, and celebrating their progress.

In closing, the resilience, enthusiasm, and commitment demonstrated by our Junior School students this term have been truly inspiring. It is wonderful to see them grow academically, socially, and personally, all while living out the values that define Mordialloc College.

Thank you to all students, families, and staff for your ongoing support in making this a successful and enriching term. Here’s to continuing the momentum as we move through the remainder of Term 3!
