KLA Feature - TAS

It’s been an exciting semester for Stage 5 TAS students, as they dive deeper into their chosen electives, exploring areas of specialisation and building specific skills within their TAS subjects. Here’s what’s been happening:

This semester, Year 9 Design and Technology students have expanded their design and timber construction skills by creating personalised storage caddies. They explored laser cutting technology to add custom design elements, building both creativity and technical ability.

Year 10 DT students focused on structural integrity through the design and construction of plant stands. Using interlocking joinery techniques, they developed functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces that demonstrate precision and thoughtful design.

Well done to all students on their impressive work!

Year 10 Food Technology students have explored units on Food Equity and Food Service & Catering, developing skills in planning, preparing, and presenting food.

A highlight was baking muffins for the Vinnies Van, combining practical skills with community service. Students also enjoyed designing and delivering a High Tea, showcasing teamwork, menu planning, and food styling.

It’s been a rewarding semester, with students growing in both confidence and capability!

Year 9 iSTEM students have had an exciting introduction to engineering, applying their problem-solving and critical thinking skills across a range of hands-on STEM activities. They explored structural design through tower and bridge building exercises  and used simulation software to investigate the factors affecting projectile trajectories, to name a few.

In Term 2, Year 9 students delved into computer-aided design (CAD), taking on the challenge of creating a two-part mechanical drawing. They successfully designed and 3D printed their own working nut and bolt, before moving on to design custom fidget spinners, showcasing their creativity and growing technical skills.

Year 10 iSTEM students embarked on an immersive exploration of cyber security, developing the skills to protect digital systems through hands-on simulations and real-world challenges. They investigated data protection, cyber threats, and access control strategies through interactive activities, then consolidated their understanding by producing a practical Quick Reference Guide to promote safe, responsible, and secure online behaviour.

In Term 2, Year 10 iSTEM students launched into the world of space tech with the “ProtoSat” challenge. Working in teams, they designed and 3D printed a satellite prototype, coded environmental sensors, and carried out a school-based weather mission—bringing together coding, design, and systems thinking in an authentic STEM experience.

This semester, Year 10 Textiles students completed a culturally inspired Furnishings project focused on Japanese interior design. They designed and created beautiful 40cm cushion covers using Simplicity Pattern S9402, incorporating traditional techniques like shibori, sashiko, patchwork, and applique.

The project combined creative design with technical sewing skills, supported by a digital portfolio documenting their process. The results reflect both craftsmanship and a thoughtful understanding of Japanese aesthetics.

Look out for a selection of these stunning cushions on display around the school soon!

Our Agriculture students have had a busy and rewarding semester!

Year 10 Agriculture students explored food and fibre production through classwork and an excursion to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. They’re currently preparing Murray Grey steers, Vegas and Vegemite, for the Greater Sydney School Cattle Competition, focusing on feeding, handling, and grooming. They are also caring for heifer calves, Mooana and Mocha, which they raised from a few weeks old, preparing them for the Penrith Show in August.

Year 9 Ag Sport looked after our Commercial Laying Chickens for the Easter Show competition, learning about poultry care and the egg industry. Year 8 Ag Sport supported the care of our cattle and learned sheep husbandry skills through hands-on farm experiences.

Our Ag Show Team meets weekly to learn livestock care and showing skills. Selected students also attended the GSSCC Training Day to work with industry professionals on everything from nutrition to judging.

We’re proud of the students' dedication and the daily care they give our animals—stay tuned for more as show season begins!
