PAIRED FLUENCY READING
What is fluency?
Fluency refers to the ability to read accurately, at an appropriate pace, and with expression. When students read fluently, they do so with automaticity and accuracy, which makes it easier for them to understand the meaning of the text. Research consistently shows a strong link between fluency and comprehension; students who read more fluently tend to have a better understanding of what they read.
To help develop reading fluency, all Grade 3–6 classrooms have implemented a "Paired Fluency Reading" routine as part of their OCHRE English lessons.
During paired fluency reading, students take turns reading aloud to one another for a set amount of time. After both students have had a turn, they repeat the process and then give each other constructive praise and feedback at the end of the session.
This routine offers students a valuable opportunity to practice reading with fluency, accuracy, and expression, engage with a variety of text types, and build confidence by reading collaboratively with their peers in a supportive environment.
