Head of Junior School
Mrs Jo Messer
We hope all our families had a restful and enjoyable winter term break. It’s a pleasure to welcome the boys back to school as we look forward to a productive and engaging term ahead. As we return, we remind families that various seasonal illnesses are still circulating. Please err on the side of caution—if your son is unwell or showing any symptoms, we ask that he stay home until he is fully recovered. This helps us keep our school community healthy and thriving.
With the cooler weather, we also recommend that boys wear the grey school jumper to school for added warmth. PE jackets may be worn over the school jumper, but not as a replacement for it. Thank you for helping us maintain our uniform standards while keeping the boys comfortable. We also encourage you to send your son on PE days with trackpants and top.
We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to a great term together!
Acknowledgement and Gratitude from Project Compassion
During the term break it was wonderful to receive this email of acknowledgement from Leanne Langdon, Community Fundraising Manager, Caritas Australia. The Certificate Leanne mentions will be framed and hung in the Junior School office.
‘Thank you for being part of Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion in 2025. St Virgil's College - Junior School has made an extraordinary impact. This Lent, together with hundreds of Catholic schools across the country, Project Compassion raised an incredible $10 million to support vulnerable communities around the world.
As a token of our deep appreciation, please find attached a Certificate of Appreciation for St Virgil's College - Junior School’s amazing contributions. We hope it serves as a reminder of the impact your school community made through Project Compassion.
We are truly grateful for your support and look forward to partnering with you again next year - together, we can continue to Unite Against Poverty and create lasting change.
Thank you for being part of Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion 2025.
Mini Vinnies Term Three Outreach
This term our outreach focuses on a Charity closer to home. Week 3 is Homelessness Week.
During Homelessness Week we have a different focus each day:
Monday 4 August: Pancake ($3) /Hot Chocolate Day ($2)
Tuesday 5 August: Bring a Blanket Day
Wednesday 6 August: Wear Your Winter Woollies Day: Gold Coin Donation
Thursday 7 August: Louis Van: Soup and Muffin Making
Friday 8 August: Beanie Day: Wear one and donate one
Our Term Two launch was incredibly successful. With your support and generous donations our ‘house bins’ have already been emptied once, and we raised an amazing $918.55. This is already enough to purchase five backpack beds and ten polar fleece sleeping bags, which was our initial objective. What a fantastic effort from everyone —thank you for making such a meaningful difference!
Mary Rice Centre and Walkathon - Friday 22 August
In Term Three the College celebrates Mary Rice Day. Mary Rice was the daughter of Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers. Traditionally, on this day, we celebrate Mass as well as holding a walkathon, symbolic of the daily walk the students have to make to the Mary Rice Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. More details about this day will be circulated in the coming weeks.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 5/6 water polo team who won Water Polo Tasmania’s Primary Water Polo Competition on the last Friday night of Term Two. After finishing on top of the ladder for the regular season — our team defeated Lauderdale with the final scoreline of 8-7.
