3v3 Basketball Gala Day

We had a 3v3 Basketball Gala Day today in the Den and were joined by O’Connor, Inverell, Guyra and BackTrack. All teams played so well and should be so proud of their efforts, sportsmanship and respect shown. We had the ASC Clippers go head to head with the ASC Grizzlies in the grand final, with the Grizzlies coming out on top 21-10. 💪🏼 Another big shout out to the ASC Mavericks who were runners up to a strong Guyra side, well played guys! Thankyou also to all our wonderful students who refereed many games, as well as NIBL and Armidale Basketball for organising such a fabulous day! 🏀

Congratulations to our Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science students!

Your fantastic depth studies showcased impressive research skills, critical thinking, and a strong understanding of environmental science. Well done on all your hard work!

A big thank you to Associate Professor Lisa Lobry de Bruyn from the School of Environmental and Rural Science at UNE, and to Ms Tahlia Stewart for your valuable time and constructive feedback on our students' experimental designs and presentations. Your support has made a real impact!

Science Fair Success!

Congratulations to all our Year 10 students who submitted investigations for this year’s Science Fair. The standard of work was exceptionally high, making it a very difficult decision for our judges.

A big thank you to our judging panel:

Winter Warrior Challenge at Lake Keepit!

43 students and 2 teachers took on the Winter Warrior Challenge—a gruelling 15km course packed with physical and mental obstacles including long-distance log and tyre carries, mountain biking, canoe paddling, puzzles, fire lighting, a slip 'n' slide, and a muddy obstacle course!

Our students showed incredible grit, teamwork, and determination throughout the day, and were fantastic ambassadors for ASC.

A huge congratulations to all who participated—and a special shoutout to our Year 10 boys team who claimed 1st place!

We’re so proud of everyone’s efforts. What a day!

Scripture Union Leadership Conference

In the first week of the July school holidays 13 Armidale Secondary College students and I attended the Scripture Union Leadership Conference in Tamworth. Leadership Conference is an epic, five-day conference programmed to deliver Christian leadership training in a range of skills for emerging and established high school student leaders in Years 9-12. Leadership Conference nourishes, encourages and equips students to not only develop skills but, more importantly, to grow in Christian character through Bible teaching, discussion and reflection.

Students came from a variety of school backgrounds, public, private and home school, with a catchment from Sydney to Ballina and everywhere in between.

There were many highlights from the week, including 5 Bible talks from the book of Exodus, a workshop on Story-telling the Gospel from long-term missionary and Christian author Christine Dillon, and a night of student testimonies. Leadership strands and workshops culminated with students preparing and delivering a 30-minute Christian meeting, putting their skills into practice in a real-world setting.

ASC students have returned with renewed enthusiasm to keep meeting together for our lunch time Christian group, BOOST, along with a new initiative of meeting to read the Bible.

I would like to thank Armidale Youth Futures for subsidising 50% of costs for ASC students to attend, and Young Life for providing their minibus for transporting students.

Mathematics competitions at ASC

Every year, many talented Mathematics students at Armidale Secondary College take part in competitions run by the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT); and every year we have students who get outstanding results. All of the AMT competitions require students to use high-level mathematical thinking and problem solving skills to solve a set of highly challenging mathematical questions. Thus, all students who participate should be acknowledged for their academic abilities and congratulated on their efforts and their achievements.

We have already reported results from the Kangaroo sans Frontiers competition, held in Term 1.

In Term 2, twelve highly dedicated ASC students from Years 7 to 10 competed in the Mathematics Challenge, in which they are given four weeks to tackle six unfamiliar and tricky questions. Their results are impressive, including a Credit award to Tristan Gursanscky of Year 8, Distinctions for Minh Nguyen, Kourosh Sahebjam, Arash Sahebjam, Kian Sahebjam and Lachlan Wise, all in Year 7, and High Distinctions awarded to Jaylan Matthews of Year 7 and Dezi Suddaby of Year 10.

In Week 3 this term, we had 72 ASC students from Years 7 to 12 participating in the internationally prestigious Australian Mathematics Competition: there were 23 ASC students from Years 11 and 12 who sat the Senior paper, 22 Year 9 and 10s who did the Intermediate level and 27 Juniors from Years 7 and 8. In the Australian Mathematics Competition, students have 75 minutes to work on 30 questions of increasing difficulty (ranging from quite hard to fiendishly difficult!) – all under test conditions in a large room without calculators or online help. Every year, it is a pleasure for us Mathematics teachers to supervise the room-full of such talented young mathematicians working with intense focus for 75 minutes. We will know the results from this competition by the end of term – and hopefully in time to publish in the next Newsletter.

We also have a small number of students currently completing the Maths Enrichment competition, which runs for twelve weeks between July and October. These students know that they need to hand in their completed work preferably by the end of Term 3, but definitely before the absolute deadline for marking on Tuesday 14th October (day 1 of Term 4).

Finally, a thank you to ASC Mathematics teacher Ms Dinusha Wijewickrama for her dedicated work in organising all of the AMT competitions at ASC.
