Grade 5

English
Grade 5 students are completing their Core Knowledge Unit on Feudal Japan. Next week, we will begin our next Core Knowledge Unit: Australian Democracy. Every day, they are practicing their reading fluency where they focus on accuracy and pace.
In writing, students will be focusing on the details within each paragraph. We are focusing on writing paragraphs that are concise and contain a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding statement. Students will also be practicing editing sentences within a passage for consistent tense; and generating sentences containing interjections.
Mathematics
Students are continuing to progress through the levels of number fluency in our daily 'Facts on Fire.' We encourage students to practice their multiplication and division facts outside of school.
Over the next two weeks, Grade 5 students will be learning about:
-Converting between 12- and 24-hour time.
-Reading and interpreting timetables and schedules with 24-hour time.
-Creating schedules using 24-hour time.
-Adding fractions with the same denominator.
-Subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
-Solving addition and subtraction worded problems with fractions that have the same denominator.
-Finding equivalent fractions with related denominators.
Inquiry
Grade 6 students are continuing to delve into the history of Barwon Heads in the school's 150th year. We will be learning about the bollards of the town and designing our own bollards. These will be displayed in our 'Walk Through Time' exhibition at the end of the term.
