Grade 4

English

The Grade 4 students have been delving into the development of the Australian Constitution. Recent lessons have explored how the Australian Government operates today, how the Constitution can be amended, and how Federation united the nation. This week, students have begun learning about Local Government, with initial lessons focusing on the difference between rules and laws, and how laws influence our daily lives.

Alongside their reading unit, students have been developing their ability to identify key ideas in a topic and use them to write topic sentences, supporting details, and effective concluding sentences.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the Grade 4 students have finalised their learning on addition and subtraction and have now begun a new unit on multiplication and division. Key focuses include using the associative property of multiplication, identifying numbers divisible by 2, 5 or 10, and representing the multiplication algorithm using a flow chart.

In addition, students continue to develop their automaticity through daily number fluency practice. Last week, the Grade 4 cohort answered nearly 1,400 digits correctly!

Inquiry

This term, our Inquiry unit will explore the history of our school and the Barwon Heads community over the past 150 years. Students have begun by learning about the history of the school, the Barwon Heads bridge, and the changes to Hitchcock Avenue over time. In the coming weeks, students will design their own bollard to be featured as part of our end-of-term celebration.
