Explore the Learning in Prep

English

In Week 4, the Preps will begin a new Core Knowledge unit, 'Exploring and Moving to Australia.' They will be exploring the questions:

  • What is diversity?
  • What is a natural landmark?
  • What is a constructed landmark?

The students will learn to apply knowledge from this unit to expand sentences using the sentence stems 'because' and 'but.'  In Week 4, students will learn the new sounds ‘ff’, 'll', 'ss' and 'zz' through explicit phonics, handwriting and reading fluency instruction. The Preps will be learning the new high frequency words: little, one, do, does, down, here.

Mathematics

Students will continue to learn to say and write two digit numbers. They will also be introduced to Fluency practice. As in reading, developing fluency in Maths allows students to answer questions quickly and correctly. At the beginning of each lesson, the students will be taught to write the answer to addition problems, working along the top row and moving forward. Students will be asked to complete as many problems as they can in two minutes. While the students are learning our Maths Fluency routines, we will complete the problems together, then they will move to working through these independently.

Inquiry

Students will read the Dreaming story, 'Bunjil the Eagle,' then work together to create an eagle out of their handprints, using Aboriginal art colours and patterns.

As part of our 150 Years of Barwon Heads Primary School unit, the students went on an excursion down our Main Street. On this walk, the students observed the different shops and services and discussed how these have changed over time. The students will then create their own shop over the next few weeks, which will be part of the Prep Main Street that we are making for the 150 Years Exhibition at the end of term.
