Year 3 News

Welcome to Year 3
Welcome to the 2026 school year. It has been great to get back into the classroom and see the excitement on the children's faces as they see their friends and staff. They have been settling in well and we are getting ready for a busy term ahead. Please find information below about curriculum areas that will be covered this term.
Religion
The To Live in Christ Jesus Religious Education Curriculum unit this term is The Life and Mission of Jesus. In this inquiry, students will learn about the life of Jesus Christ and the impact that he has had on the community during the time of his life, as well as after his death. Furthermore, we will explore how as Catholics, we enact His mission today. We will also learn how the Church celebrates Jesus’ life, death and resurrection during Lent and the lead up to Easter.
English
Reading
This term in Reading we will be exploring texts based around Australian History. We will be focusing on the text features of fiction texts and working on comprehension strategies. This will also create links to our Humanities History unit for the term, which will allow students an opportunity to form deeper connections with the texts.
Writing
As our students develop as writers, it is important for them to be exposed to a variety of texts. To begin the term, we are exploring narratives and persuasives. Students will have the opportunity to delve into the world of writing, in which they can express their opinions and ideas using the structure and features of narrative and persuasive text types.
Handwriting
When handwriting, we will continue to model correct hand grip, paper position, body posture and letter formation. Students write on dotted thirds to foster the appropriate size and position of letters. Once students have demonstrated improvement in legibility and application, we will be modelling cursive handwriting.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will explore the concept of place value. They will read, write, and model numbers in a variety of ways to show their understanding of the value of different digits within a number. We will also explore Data Representation and Interpretation.
Home Learning
We ask that your child spends approximately 15-20 minutes a night (where possible) reading aloud to a parent/guardian/older sibling and discuss what they have read. The students will each be provided with a reading diary for them to fill in with the book or chapters they have read, which will be checked by their teacher every Monday. This is to foster their responsibility around their own learning.
Important Information
Sun Smart
During Terms 1 and 4, students are required to wear their school hats for all outdoor activities as per our Sun Smart Policy. Rule is ‘No Hat No Play’. Students are also required to bring a named drink bottle to school each day. Bottles can be refilled as needed during the day.
Uniform
A reminder that children are to wear appropriate uniform — either full summer or sports uniform on designated sport day. If your child is not in their uniform, please write a note for your teacher to explain the reason. If your child’s hair is longer than their shoulders, please remember to make sure their hair is tied back. Please refer to the School Uniform Policy on the school website.
Fruit Break
We have a fruit break each morning. Please ensure that your child brings fresh fruit or vegetables for this brain break.
Lunch Orders
The canteen will be open Wednesdays and Fridays, meaning lunch orders will only be available on those two days. Please follow the new method of payment for the lunch orders via the CDFPay App. If you have any questions about this change, please contact the office.
Rubbish
In an attempt to reduce the waste our school produces, we encourage parents/guardians to pack a litter free lunchbox as much as possible.
ICT Agreement
ICT agreement forms have been sent to you via PAM. We ask that you please spend time reading through this with your child and you acknowledge that it has been read.
NAPLAN
As NAPLAN steadily approaches, we understand some families would like their child to prepare for this. We will be revising concepts in the lead-up to the tests in class. However, if you would like some extra work we recommend purchasing NAPLAN-style revision books. These can be found at any book store. NAPLAN demonstration tests are available online at no cost.
Communication
Please make sure that concerns or questions regarding student learning are communicated via email to your students' teacher.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your student's teacher via teh email listed below. We are here to help.
We look forward to working with you throughout the year!
