Year 1 News

Welcome to Year One

Welcome back to school for 2026. We hope you all had a restful break and a wonderful Christmas with your families and friends. We are so happy with how the children have settled in to their new year! They have shown great knowledge of the expectations and routines.

Religion

This term, our Year One students will explore the idea of 'Who is Jesus?', 'What did he do?' and 'How can I be more like Jesus?" We will learn about Mary and how she is an important figure in Catholic life and the Mission of Jesus.

English

This term in Year One we will follow on from our learning in 2025 using a blend of a program called UfLI and Little Learners Love Literacy teaching students to read, write and spell.  We will encourage students to read for understanding, evidenced through answering questions related to text that they have read. Students will be introduced to new sound blends and will learn to apply this knowledge to their reading.

For our shared reads, we will be working on our comprehension skills, developing a deeper understanding of vocabulary and sequencing in stories.

In writing this term we will be focusing on narratives, utilising our skills from last term of: Who?, Where?, What?, Doing What?, and When? and learning how to use them when we retell an event or story. As well as this, we will be continuing to look at sentence structure, identifying things such as: capital letters and full stops and further developing these skills.

Mathematics

Counting and place value skills will be an important part of every Maths lesson. Our main focus areas will be addition and subtraction, where students will explore how to use concrete materials to support students to recognise, order and show numbers. We will learn strategies to assist with solving mathmatical problems.

Humanities

This coming Semester, our Year One students will develop their understanding of how items have changed over time, such as schools and toys. They will develop their abilities to ask historical questions, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking about how things are different and why. They will explore belonging, families, groups and how these things shape us.

Personal and Social Capabilities

To support our social and emotional skills we will use the Rights, Resilience

and Respectful Relationship resource to support student learning.

In Term One, we will cover topics that explore Emotional Literacy and Personal Strengths.

Important Information

Fruit Break

We have fruit break everyday around 10 am so please ensure that your child brings fresh fruit or vegetables.

The canteen will be open Wednesdays and Fridays, meaning lunch orders will only be available on those two days. Please follow the new method of payment for the lunch orders via the CDFPay App. If you have any questions about this change please contact the office.

Rubbish

In an attempt to reduce the waste our school produces, we encourage parents/guardians to pack a litter free lunch as much as possible.

If your child is not in their uniform please write a note for your teacher to explain the reason.
