Year 5 News

Dear Parents/Carers,
Term One has begun with lots of energy and excitement as students settle into their classrooms. It’s been wonderful to see them adapting and following new routines, and engaging with their classes.
Below, you will find:
- An overview of what your child will be learning in Year 5
- Key dates and events to mark on your calendar
- Information on how to stay connected with your classroom teacher
Reading
Students will build their Reading skills by identifying key information in texts and exploring how stories and information are shaped by cultural, historical, and social contexts. They will think more deeply about what they read by discussing both the obvious and implied meanings, and by exploring how images, sound, and media features help create meaning.
Writing
In Writing, students will create Persuasive and Narrative texts. They will focus on organising ideas clearly, using appropriate structures, and choosing language that suits the purpose and audience. Students will edit and improve their writing, learning how sentence structure and descriptive language can make writing clearer, more engaging, and more effective.
Mathematics
This term, students will strengthen their number skills by working with fractions, decimals, and percentages, and learning how these connect to one another. They will also explore data by collecting and displaying information in graphs and spreadsheets, and interpreting what the data shows. Students will investigate chance and probability, using simple experiments to explore how likely different outcomes are.
Humanities
Our unit for this term is History. Students will learn about life in Australia during the 1800s. They will explore why British colonies were established, the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, migrants, and settlers, and how life changed over time.
Religion
Our strand for this term in The Life and Mission of Jesus. Students will learn how Christians are witnessing and proclaiming God’s unconditional love and building the Kingdom and Reign of God. They learn that many of Jesus’ parables give us an insight into the Kingdom and Reign of God.
Science
Students will learn about Biological Sciences by investigating habitats and the physical conditions that support living things, such as water, light, soil, and shelter. They will explore how changes to environments - both natural and human-made - can affect plants and animals, and why caring for habitats is important.
Capabilities
Throughout the term, students will develop their personal and social skills to support their wellbeing and learning. They will practise managing emotions, coping with challenges, working independently, and seeking help when needed. Students will also explore empathy, personal strengths, goal setting, and decision-making, while learning how values, rights, and responsibilities guide our choices.
Reminders
Fruit Break
We have a fruit break everyday, please ensure that your child brings fresh fruit or vegetables to support healthy eating.
Lunch Orders
The canteen will be open Wednesdays and Fridays, meaning lunch orders will only be available on those two days. Please follow the new method of payment for the lunch orders via the CDFPay App. If you have any questions about this change, please contact the office.
Uniforms and Hats
Students are required to wear their summer uniform this term, including black school shoes. On sports days, students may wear the appropriate sports uniform. A school hat must be worn during playtimes. Students without a hat will need to play under the shade sails in the courtyard as part of our “No Hat, No Play” policy.
Important Notices
NAPLAN
As NAPLAN steadily approaches, we understand some families would like their child to prepare for this. We will be revising concepts in the lead-up to the tests in class. However, if you would like some extra work we recommend purchasing NAPLAN-style revision books. These can be found at any book store. NAPLAN demonstration tests are available online at no cost.
