Music and Performing Arts

Preps  have made a great start to the year. They started playing percussion instruments and they have started looking at the xylophone and glockenspiels. On the xylophone we are exploring simple tasks like finding the correct note, playing loud and soft and then starting simple songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb.

We started playing rhythms using fruit names like 'ap-ple' and 'plum' to sound out 2 quavers and a crotchet. We are  getting used to writing the symbols on whiteboard such as crotchets and quavers.

Grade 1/2 started working on rhythmic dictation, we're using the mini whiteboards to write if we hear a crotchet, quavers or a rest when they clapped. Students are beginning to write their own compositions using the notes they have learnt, and performing in front of the class.

We are also looking at reading music and the treble clef. We're looking at lines and spaces and cheeseburger C for Middle C.

We are designing our own short rhythms to perform to the class some of the students are putting them onto the stave.

In Grade 3/4 we're looking at ukulele and learning basic TAB. We've been looking at Smoke On the Water and Happy Birthday and the The Simpsons Theme. Students who are getting the hang of it are moving onto the guitar to play the same song on 6 strings instead of 4.
