Respectful Relationships at Karoo Primary School

Respectful Relationships is a Victorian Government initiative that supports schools and early childhood settings to promote respect, positive attitudes and healthy behaviours. As part of the Victorian Curriculum, the program explicitly teaches children and young people how to build and maintain healthy relationships, develop resilience, and grow in confidence.

At Karoo Primary School, Respectful Relationships is an integral part of our curriculum and school culture. This evidence-based initiative supports us to both promote and model respect, equality and positive behaviours across our whole community.

Through Respectful Relationships, our students develop essential social and emotional skills that benefit them now and into the future.

The program aims to:

  • Model respect and equality across the whole school community.
  • Support social and emotional learning through explicit teaching.
  • Promote gender equality and respectful relationships as a foundation for preventing family violence.
  • Build a positive school culture where all members feel safe, included and valued.

The program is delivered through the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) teaching and learning materials, aligned with the Victorian Curriculum from Foundation to Year 12. These resources support students to develop skills in emotional literacy, recognising personal strengths, positive coping strategies, problem-solving, stress management, help-seeking, gender identity and positive gender relations.

Importantly, Respectful Relationships extends beyond the classroom. It is a whole-school approach, meaning we work in partnership with students, staff, families and the wider community to embed respect and equality into our everyday interactions, policies and practices.
