Assistant Principal's Report

Vermont Secondary College

Dear Vermont Community,

As we embark upon another term, we warmly welcome all new and returning families to our college community.

We would like to highlight a couple of key policies to ensure a successful school experience for all. Your support in reinforcing the school’s approach on the matters outlined below is very much appreciated.

Student Behaviour Policy

The updated Student Behaviour Policy is available here.

Please be aware that ‘Behaviour Notifications’ are visible to parents. These are records used by the school to record incidents of relatively low-level behaviour that impact on the learning environment and have been managed by the teacher in the classroom.

As isolated incidents these should not be a cause for great concern however, if you notice a pattern emerging, or are worried about your child’s presentation and wellbeing, please don’t hesitate in reaching out to your child’s Student Manager.

Lates

Punctual arrival to class is important not only for your child's learning, but also the learning of others as late arrivals disturb classroom routine and focus. Accordingly, please encourage your child to prioritise arriving on time to school and class.

If your child arrives late to school they should sign in at the General Office before going to class. Where students are late to class, either for period 1 or other classes throughout the day, classroom teachers will record the lateness and note the time of arrival. Teachers will encourage students to be responsible for their punctuality, and the House Team will monitor patterns of lateness and work directly with students as needed.

Phones and Headphones

In alignment with the Ministerial Policy on phone use, student’s phones should be off and secured in their locker during the school day.

If a phone is seen by a staff member during the school day, it will be taken to the General Office and can be collected at the end of the day.

Our preference is that headphones are not used during the school day as being able to hear instructions, alarms, and those around us is important for safety and connection. However, we recognise that there are times when the use of headphones is appropriate. Students may wear headphones during private study in the Senior Study Centre or Library, and in classrooms when permission is given by the teacher. Headphones may also be used to support students with additional learning or wellbeing needs, in line with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Student Profile.

We appreciate students using headphones responsibly and in a way that supports both their own learning and the shared school environment.

Please contact the House Team with any concerns or queries regarding your child or any of the policies or approaches outlined above.

Kind regards,
